anybody know where to buy sock weight magic balls? the only references to magic balls on KH are the crazy bee sweet ones with ribbons etc (http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showthread.php?t=84483%20and%20http://www.besweetproducts.com/product_type.php?cat=1&prod=1), but nothing about plain fingering ones… maybe it’s something that only exists in my mind, for sale…?
I never heard of these magic balls before. Why not make your own? Save your yarn ends and bits and pieces and just tie them together. The only description that I found in the thread -
For those of you unfamiliar with Magic Ball: it is a skein or hank of all different, color-coordinating fibers that are actually just tied together to make some yardage of yarn to knit with. The fibers are of all different kinds and weights and give a real funky, bohemian effect.
- and it says “all different … weights” so I think that might explain it for you.
maybe i should explain further…
i’ve been reading, online, in various sock books, etc., about people making/trading/using magic balls… and while yes, one really can make it out of any combination of knitable lengths, there are many who deal specifically in fingering and sock weight ones.
they use whichever join works for the yarns they have, any combination of russian, felted/‘spit’, magic knots, etc. the plan is to make them long enough/weighty enough, that it’s an approximation to a 100 gram ball, 350-425 yards, enough for a pair of socks.
i’ve seen on old blogs/forums where people bought them, like at their LYS, but they didn’t leave any specifics, so i can’t check if those stores still exist, etc. that’s why i thought i’d try here.
but i may just have to make my own as time goes by. and make extra, so i can gift a few.
i’ve already started one for worsted weight… i was thinking it’d be a ‘cheat’ for a crazy garter stitch blanket, a la http://verypink.com/2012/06/22/approximately-226000-stitches/ but without all the trimming or weaving in of ends.
i’ve also seen ones where people took those loom knit potholder fabric rings, and knotted them all in a huge chain, and then knit that, into things like crazy thick and colored bath mats… that’d be fun.
and i’ve seen where people are sending their scraps to others, who are the ‘keepers of the magic ball’… please NOBODY send me your scraps. i do not possess the extra space or time, or space-time right now. my house is not multi-dimensional, or a hammerspace (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammerspace)
but yes, anyway… magic sock balls… keeping my eyes peeled… - X
