when to slide marker in these german short rows

I am knitting Petite Knit’s Caramel Sweater. The pattern divide the work into sleeves and front and back by placing markers on either side of raglan sts (a total of 8 markers + 1 marker for BOR).

The german short row instructions are:

Step 1 (RS): Knit across right back, M1R, knit the raglan stitch, M1L, knit across right sleeve, M1R, knit
the raglan stitch, M1L, k2 (4 sts increased). Turn.
Step 2 (WS): Purl to beginning of round marker (mid back).
Step 3 (WS): Purl across left back, M1R, purl the raglan stitch, M1L, purl across left sleeve, M1R, purl
the raglan stitch, M1L, p2 (4 sts increased). Turn.
Step 4 (RS): Knit to beginning of round marker (mid back).

I’m confused because the instructions don’t tell you when to slide the marker. For step 1, do I knit across right back, M1R, slide the marker, knit the raglan stitch, slide the marker, M1L… etc? I’m confused where I’m supposed to be performing the increases.

Thank you!

You make the increase outside of the markers, just as you describe, mostly because it’s less confusing if the markers remain at a constant distance. The result would be the same if you increased inside the markers, but they would get farther and farther apart, which could confuse your counting later on.

And these aren’t German short rows, these are just raglan increases. There may be GSRs where you turn after passing the front raglan line, if that’s what’s specified elsewhere in the pattern. This would be helping to raise the back neck.

The increases are as ColoCro explained, outside the markers with the single raglan stitch remaining between the two markers at each raglan line. It’s assumed that you’ll slip the makers although it might have been clearer to state that in the pattern.

The turns to the wrong side without knitting a complete round indicate the short rows. Since the sweater is knit top down the knitting direction is right back, right sleeve, front 2sts then turn and purl to the mid back and on across the left back to the left sleeve and front 2sts then turn to the knit side and work to mid back.
