What causes the button bad to have gaps in it? Does that make sense??

Around the button holes or in the spaces between the buttons so it say shows your blouse?

if it’s between the two sides of the cardigan so the shirt underneath shows, i would think it’s because the cardigan is a little too small. that’s usually the reason with store-bought cardigans.
It could also be that the button holes don’t match up to the buttons, or maybe one side is longer than the other so you had to stretch it? :shrug:
