What's the best way to weave these ends?

I’m nearly 1/2 way through my blanket and thought I should clean up all the loose ends so far. What would be the best way to weave them? Up the colour seams or up and down the rows? This is what it currently looks like:

Also, every time I had to start a new ball of yarn, I tried to do it at the beginning of a row, but now I have a bunch of holes where I couldn’t use intarsia (maybe I did it wrong). I’m hoping I can weave the end to cover these holes.

Thanks for the help in advance!

I weave them into the same color. I follow the stitches for 3 stitches or so then turn and go back often intentionally splitting some stitches.

And you can certainly close up the holes when you weave in the ends. You can cross the ends as you follow the path of the stitches.
You can avoid the holes by overlapping the two ends when you first join the new yarn. Do one or two sts with both yarns.
Your blanket looks beautiful even from the reverse side.

Thanks so much. Since we received an unexpected 6 inches of snow last night (Spring? what Spring?) I thought today would a great day to stay in and have just finished weaving the whole first half.

Does anyone feel that weaving the ends is the most tedious part of knitting? I know it needs to be done, but geez it’s not my fav task by any means :zombie:

Hard to disagree. Not my favorite either but weaving in as you go along, the way you’re planning on doing makes it slightly less painful.

I make “weaving in ends” its own sub-project. Right now I have five or six 12" blocks I’ve knit from the Building Blocks book by Michelle Hunter. That’s almost enough ends to bother with in my estimation.

But my very first craft was hand embroidery, so maybe that plays a part. My yarn needle and I play a game of “camouflage the ends” so that I can really get into the proper/helpful/positive state of mind rather than keep interrupting the “knitting” state of mind. Then I go back from the “zen camouflage” to “knitting” and make more blocks/projects.

Hats are a pain. The hat is done; there are probably only two ends to work in. I don’t necessarily get a feel for the best way to camouflage that particular yarn in future projects.

Weird, I know, but I’m putting it out there in case anyone can use it. Oh, yes: it helps to leave yourself generously long ends, 6 to 8". That way, there’s plenty to work with, weave in, and still have some to clip off when the weaving is done.

DCM, that’s great. I hadn’t realized it till I read your post but since I’ve been trying use duplicate stitch for the tails it’s not so bad. Duplicate stitch has been a bear for me to get the hang of, what better way to practice?

I like to leave 6-8" as well. To get rid of holes you can cross the yarns and weave in on the opposite sides.

I don’t like to weave in ends. Necessary evil though. :teehee:
