When aren’t we in a knitting or crochet time of year? It’s late in 2026 but there are still projects and yarn festivals or yarn crawls to go. Here’s a listing of some of the festivals going on world-wide. If your favorite local event has been omitted, let Clara Parkes know so it can be included for next year’s list.
And as always, we’d like to know right here at KnittingHelp, what’s on your needles or hooks and what knitting plans do you have for the fall?
Almost a week into october and no one has posted. Maybe everyone is busy at those yarn festivals?
I’m swatching. When am I not swatching?
There is a vintage filet crochet pattern I wanted to use as a stranded colour knitting chart but the chart needs remaking as it’s not clear enough to see on screen and knit at the same time. I recharted a couple of sections so I could work a swatch but the swatch showed me this yarn doesn’t really like the randomness of the stranded work, it’s quite messy and i know it would be more even and nicer looking in a different yarn.
I’ve used this yarn before (Scheepies Scrumptious) and it enjoys more regular stranded work with smaller motifs so that’s what I’ve shifted to. The swatch here has 2 different sections of the original idea and then the move to the smaller, more regular stranded work.
Then I’ve swatched and frogged a few different hem and short row shaping trials to make the back a little longer than the front.
Not that keen on the angle of rib by the very straight colourwork so I’m trying a folded or folded picot hem next.
This sweater was knit over the summer and then went into hibernation until the weather turned cooler this week. Still needs blocking but it was fun to see it again.
The pattern is The Great Wave Pullover by Lizabeth Towers on Ravelry.
I found this so interesting. I never knew much about yarn crawls but I found this so informative . I did not realize there were all these yarn shops in the central Texas area. On my agenda next time I go see family in Austin which I am several hours away. Anyway I’m working on the Leksak tunic. I am working on the body and have always found, at the end all the weaving was intimidating. So I have woven all those in up to this point. The project seems so much cleaner without all the yarn ends flopping around. Who knew.
I genuinely enjoy swatching. It’s fun to do research when I have the focus for it, and it’s a fun pre project that gets me really looking forward to the final project. I hope this research pans out for you!
Alright, I don’t have any pictures yet, but I just went to my yarn store and came back with supplies and excitement! I got a lace weight mercerized cotton and a 1mm hook to work it with so I can try my hand at those short curtains. I also gathered some references and free patterns, so now I just have to pick one and give it a try!
I also got a dark purple chenille to crochet a little toucan with from that booklet I got last time, and then I got two more colors of a yarn I already had to swatch with. I’m thinking of trying to make an argyle sweater vest with that, so I’ll probably make a swatch with ribbing then argyle in the round, then flat short rows, and a border at a slanted edge to practice the technique and make sure it looks as nice as I want it to. I’m very excited about it!
I did a test with the lace weight. This crochet is very different from my usual and especially because the tip is tapered. My usual one has a step in it, so there’s the thick part where I gauge the size of my stitches near the handle, and the thinner part that needs to slide through them. I thought the taper would make it hard to gauge consistently, but it actually went really well. I focused of keeping the same position of my hand on it and trusted it was well made, and I ended up finding it more fluid! And so now I’m actually considering getting my usual 2,5mm from the same brand…
Since I don’t have room in my giant cedar chest for anymore sweaters, no more room in the flat, rolling bin under my bed for shawls and scarves, no more room in the bag in my entry hall closet for mitts, no more room in my hat drawer, I’ve
