Whatcha' Knitting? October, 2025

Fall is here in earnest, at least in the northern hemisphere. Time for cooler weather, yarn crawls and fiber festivals. Have you been to any festivals? And have they inspired a future project? What projects have you finished and which ones are you working on?

Greetings from the Shenandoah Fiber Festival!

After the distraction of my stitch sampler scarf for my LYS, I’m back to my Stephen West ā€œWelted Inclineā€ shawl, and a crochet project, ā€œLost in Time Scarfā€, by Johanna Lindahl.

After weeks of much despair, I finally got the guts to knit my first sweater (even though it’s spring here and 32°C - 89°F - are mostly the norm). Already done my swatch and can’t wait to cast on! I chose the pattern from a book my husband got me for my early birthday (planning to make it in shades of green)

I’ve never been to a festival or crawl. I’m afraid I don’t usually need any new ideas . I have so many things in progress and want to finish so I can make other things. Are we ā€œnestingā€ this time of year?

I have socks on my needles. I suddenly changed tension or something. I’m having to totally change my recipe. I also lost 25 lb and my feet are a bit smaller! Woo-hoo! But that’s not good for mindless sock knitting!

Also have a wrap that’s been on the needles since May. Going to make Christmas ornaments for the seven grandkids. I also want to make hats for them. I started crocheting a simple sweater but it gives me knots in my trapezius so it’s in time out.

I have three scarves to block. The latest is from yarn I bought while on a cruise to Alaska. I have another skein of it for socks. I bought two skeins to have enough for socks. It’s so pretty that I wanted something more visible. Have I mentioned knitting socks? I have several skeins waiting to be worked up not to mention the two tubs of sock yarn and scraps.

I am going to give this a go. What do y’all think about using this verigated purple from https://www.whichwaycrafts.com/ - Do y’all think the verigations will look good?

I think it will be beautiful with this yarn!

Wow, so many exciting things going on here.

@salmonmac enjoy your yarn festival, it sounds great. Here is wet every day, I’m glad to be indoors.

@ColoCro your crochet work looks so intricate and detailed. I’m a bit envious, my crochet always looks like an old rag.

@PamPassarelli cheering you on with your first sweater, how exciting! Sweaters are almost all I make, this year I made a couple of summer sweaters in lighter yarn but right now I’m regretting not starting the winter sweaters a bit sooner as it has gone from summer to winter overnight and now I want thick and cozy, plus heavier yarn would have been so much easier to dry in the warmer weather. I notice your sweater is seamless, if you find it too hot to knit when it gets bigger you might consider one made in smaller sections as they aren’t so warm to work on.

I’ve been swatching and frogging.
Tried out a new yarn brushed alpaca silk, I’ve never worked ith fluffy hairy yarn before and just wanted to try it. Hmm, I think it’s not for me. I tried it on it’s own with a 1 row scarf pattern someone kindly linked a couple of months ago. The pattern is really nice but I didn’t like it in this yarn. The yarn didn’t frog well so the piece went in the bin. I’ll try it out again (at some point) held with another yarn and see if I like the effect.
I tried out some new yarn (scheepies scrumptious, recycled plastic bottles) in charcoal icecream (black) with 2 optional contrast colours with a few different ideas including an Arne and Carlos reverse stockinette intarsia design I thought I would really like - hated it, frogged.
Then when I was knitting a basic rectangle of black with a deep stripe of contrast when I spotted a sweater on TV and knew I wanted to make that sweater in the 2 colours I was working.
Spent a couple of days pausing TV trying to see just how the intarsia pattern worked and cursing for not having knitting chart paper big enough. And then realised i could google the sweater and got a great still pic from the online shop selling them. So I am shamelessly copying, in different colours.
I have swatched single strand on 4 mm and double strand on 5.5 mm, I’m reasonably sure I’ll go with the chunkier double strand.

Ordered an A3 pad of 5mm squared paper to chart on. I don’t know why I didn’t think of this months (years) ago, I never have chart paper big enough for what I want and have a habit of breaking stitch fiddle. Can’t wait for it to arrive so i can crack on with this cozy sweater. The yarn is so soft!

You can do it, your color work is excellent.
Not sure now where or when I found this Knitters graph paper making site and think it will help you in your chart making. It could be scaled per swach count, print it blank, than you can make design per your stitch count. (It suppose to LOL) not tried myself because needed different graph in that time. It is free
Keep wonderfull work Creation

I finished the picket fence T-shirt. I used Patons Grace - a DK mercerized cotton. It was a nice pattern and I think I will knit another one with the lavender Cascades Pima Cotton yarn I bought on sale.

I knit this for a neighbor who always brings me delicious home made jams and other goodies. The Lucia Scarf, a free pattern on Hobbii. I used one ball of Rico Superba Easy - a superwash wool.

@DeborahB you and your neighbour are so lucky getting such lovely gifts from one another!

@cspierer this set is made so perfectly. The cardigan especially is gorgeous and a perfect example of just how beautiful a piece can be without lots of fancy colour work or lace stitches, the small stitchwork detail really sets off the clean finish.

Thought I’d share a progress pic or two.

I am almost half way through my current project (my shameless copying of a design I saw). Lots of firsts for me and new things for me to be challenged by.

The colour chart took a while but I love my new A3 size squared paper! I saw on the shop version of this sweater that none of the seams aligned on the colour work and also one side of each sleeve had an odd mirror image of the pattern so the motif didn’t run right across smoothly. I have ā€˜corrected’ or done my version of the motif and the plan is it aligns at the seams and that the back is a full mirrored chart so the pattern on the inside sleeve mirrors.

The sleeves are knit side ways. The cuff I knit single strand with the plan to fold inwards and sew down for a double cuff but now I’m not sure, I quite like them folded to the outside in a more relaxed way or even left long.

When I had finished one sleeve I estimated how much green yarn I would need to complete the sweater, I’d only bought one ball as a trial. I would need a full 2 with none to spare. The shop was almost sold out! Only 3 left, and in my dye lot. I bought 2 of them, better to have a ball left over than be a tiny but short. Looks like this yarn is discontinued now. Lucky I didn’t wait longer.

Creations your sweater looks beautiful so far. You inspire me to be more creative in my knitting instead of just following patterns as written.
