Whatcha' Knitting? March, 2025

When my Knit picks order gets here, I will be knitting another pair of socks for my daughter. I will also knit myself another pair of socks. I bought enough yarn to get a couple of pairs.

My friend and I ordered the same Advent kit, which we were going to work on together, with frequent Zoom calls to update progress. First day was a pack of “choose your own adventure” colorwork cards with holly, snowflakes, sleigh, cups of hot cocoa etc. About 5 days in, we were feeling confused by the yarn colors, which didn’t seem to relate to Christmas or even winter. Finally hunted up our own pattern, “Vega Wrap” by Shara Made. I started it last Sunday.

The colors are much brighter than they show here.

I wouldnt have given this two glances from the pattern pic but your fabric is soooo lovely I have had to save this pattern. I don’t like wraps for myself, just don’t wear them, they look fabulous on other people, but maybe I could use this stitch for a sweater. I just love how yours works. The change in texture is particularly eye catching and attractive to me. Can you tell me what the yarn fibre is? Is the light fluffy stripe a mohair? And the other yarn, is it a blended yarn?

Gosh I need to start a note book with ideas so I don’t forget!

Oh, thank you! The yarn is 100% DK superwash merino from Wonderland Yarns and Frabjous Fibers, and the fluffy yarn is 74% Baby Suri Alpaca/22% Merino/4% Polyamide, from Inspire A Mind / IAM. I’ve been using a laceweight from IAM on my Resplendence Shawl, and adding it to the Vega makes the whole thing feel like petting a bunny! I’m actually going to make it into a poncho, as the one I made years ago is always what I reach for, because it doesn’t slide off my shoulders.

I made a minor alteration to the pattern, to get the contrast stripes to behave as I wanted. There are 7 rows of pattern stitches, then 3 of garter, but that had me starting the garter stripes on a WS row (not pretty on the RS), so I’m purling a row and then knitting 2 rows. It’s plenty wide, what with the rather extreme fluff of this yarn.

I originally went with the Suri Alpaca because I find mohair fine to work with but itchy to wear. My only caveat is that it’s so VERY fluffy, it’s easy to knit the fluff and not actually catch the firm part of the yarn.

Thanks for the info.
Wow that fluffy yarn is really fluffy, it looks like a wad of cotton wool.
I’ll have to see what I can come up with to give a similar effect as I’ve now vowed to only use washable yarn (due to my disability someone else does the laundry here and I can’t go so far as gentle hand wash fabrics) so I won’t be able ton use exactly the same.
Even so, I love the effect and definitely going to look in to what I could do to get similar.
I like how you switched the pattern a bit too.

It’s ridiculously fluffy! As I said, I sometimes just catch the fluff, so have to keep an eye on it. Looking at the yarn, the solid part looks like light fingering, but it definitely knits like DK.

A tortie! Does she have tortitude? I have one who does and one who doesn’t.

I managed to injure my pinky finger lifting a pile of clean washing. Housework is dangerous! Finger should recover fully but I have to wear a splint for 8 weeks. No knitting for me. Might be able to crochet or weave in a week or two.

Will watch everyone else’s projects in the meantime

Oh, how sad! I hope you can manage one of your other crafts while you heal.

Ouch! No more laundry for 8 weeks either!
Really sorry to hear you are unable to knit for now, hope you mend quickly.

I saw a small weaving frame (just browsing online things, nothing to do with weaving) and thought of you, I suddenly wanted to weave… but I have so many things I want to make. Why is there always a long list of projects waiting to be planned/created?

Thanks for the pic.
I’ve managed to find a few different washable options which I could trial. One of them is a similar sort of blend and says machine wash on delicate… so that sounds like it’s worth a try.

Hope that finger recovers quickly. Yes, the dangers that lurk around the house, especially around cleaning! Take a rest from all of it so you can get back to the important items like knitting.

I haven’t posted a sweater in a long time but I have been busy. This is the Cider Mill Sweater by Jen Geigley. The yarn is Cascade 220 Merino. The themes in the yoke are inspired by Rhinebeck (aka NY Sheep & Wool Festival).

Off to wash and block right now.

Lovely. I feel privileged to see your knitting, it doesn’t happen so often.
Every time I see a lovely neat piece of colour work I am reminded how messy my own is. I have plenty of room for improvement and need to keep knitting and practising.

So pretty, and the knitting is perfection.

Thank you all! This was fun to knit. The circles represent apple cider donuts at the yarn festival. Yarn and donuts, perfect combination.

She has a mild case. :joy: She’s definitely stubborn and grumpy also the most loving little cat.

Oh this is so beautiful! Can’t believe this is before blocking too!

I am working on a pair of socks for myself using Knit picks Stroll Tonal Effects in a self-striping colorway called Pink Moon. It has a soft pink blending into a soft gray that blends into a darker gray. The first sock is on the needles and I am working on the cuff. It is about three inches so far. When I reach about 6 inches, I will bind off using a stretchy bind off.
