What yarn weight?

I might make this hooded sweater

But not sure what weight yarn to try.
It’s made with 3 strands of lace and fingering weight yarn but i think I’d like to use a single strand of something.
The gauge is 18 sts on 4mm, so far as i know 18 sts is an aran weight usually knit on 5mm i think it would be too firm working aran weight on 4mm.
So maybe DK but that would be 20st on 4mm, so may DK on 5mm? Or aran on 5mm?
What would you suggest?

The pattern says
GAUGE
18 sts x 25 rows in stockinette on 4 mm needles
= 10 x 10 cm.

And
Work the sweater using 1 strand of Saga and 2
strands of Alva = 3 strands held together through￾out work.

We encounter The Language Thing. I’d say a light worsted would do it. All that comes immediately to mind is Pound of Love. You might look at it online and compare to what you would want to use or have available locally or … whatever. A dk would probably work fine IMHO. I agree that Aran weight (here in the US that applies to the thicker end of the worsted range) isn’t a good choice unless you wish to rework the stitch counts. Using a yarn that you don’t need multiple strands is an excellent plan.

Thanks.
I see pound of love is labeled 19 sts on 5mm.
The gauge on the pattern being 18 sts on 4mm needle confuses me.
I realise even within yarn weights the thinkness varies, even in my limited experience I’ve used DK that is thinner and DK that is thicker.
I have my eye on a few different yarns but keep changing my mind.
I have looked at the different weight/language names in the past and there seems to be quite some overlap there - it never makes things clearer for a novice like me, ha!

I found this nifty chart, in case it helps at all!

Thanks, I’ve referred to that a few times. It doesn’t mention anything getting 18 sts on 4mm though. Probably going uo to 5mm is the way to go.

Someone on ravlery made it in bulky yarn.
