I am looking at Ribbons Baby Blanket designed by Evelyn Clark and trying to find a good SUPER soft yarn. I have a merino wool picked out for one blanket and I’m trying to come up with something for the second blanket. the soon to be mom was thinking chenelle or cashmere, any ideas?

Cashmere is fantastic for baby blankets. It makes a truly special gift which should become an heirloom. BUT, it’s also a total PITA to hand wash and dry a baby blanket which 2 seconds later has baby puke on it again.
I like nice machine washable yarns for babies. Sirdar Snuggly is a nice acrylic that’s super soft. Dale Baby Ull is a machine washable merino that’s very high quality.
i agree with avoiding any yarns that you can’t throw in the washer and dryer. the thing with babies is you just get them in a cute outfit (or put them on something NOT washable) and within 5 minutes they’ve pooped, peed, or puked on it. save the cashmere or chenille for something special for mom or for a christening blanket.
I’ve just ordered some sirdar Baby bamboo to make a blanket … it’s soft and yummy and is machine washable …
As everyone else has said I’d go with some soft and machine washable.
I can’t afford the really nice yarns yet, but here’s a few less expensive, but very soft yarns that are nice.

Definitely go machine washable with babies – my DD’s blanket (made while I was pregnant) is over 5 years old and still looks and feels great. I used some type of Sirdar. I’m about to starta blanket for my two new nieces (one dur Jan, the other due in Feb) and am thinking of trying Caron Simply Soft – I’ve seen it recommended time and time again in the forums and they have such wonderful bright colors to choose from.
i LOVE caron simply soft. I use it when i knit baby hats and i’ve used it on crocheted preemie blankets.
I just realized… with all the years i’ve been crocheting and the couple of months knitting, i have YET to make anything for myself… or dh… yet i’m planning on making the youngest two their second blankets (they outgrew the baby blankets i made for them)

Is it same to assume that all the yarns mentioned are safe for a baby? That’s my main concern when it comes to making baby stuff.
Minky fabric is the best to make blankets for babies. I have sewed many and gifted to my friends. They liked it very much.
The Dale Garn Baby Ull that’s recommended for the pattern is SUPER soft. I’ve worked with it numerous times to make baby clothes and it is great. It’s also pretty affordabe, so I would recommend using that.
