What should I buy?

My sister sent me a $40 gift card for Hobby Lobby for my birthday. So, I’m trying to figure out what to shop for. I already have enough yarn for 3+ projects on hand, I have straight needles in sizes 8, 11, 13, 15, Boye Interchangeables, and a couple of knitting spools, a “knit-chek,” tip protectors, little fold-up scissors, and a couple of stitch holders. And that’s about it.

Anybody have any suggestions on supplies I shouldn’t be knitting without? I don’t have any DPNs yet, but I was thinking I could probably use my interchangeables & magic loop to do anything small, but if I were to buy some DPNs, what would be the most popular sizes to get??? What about cable needles? I haven’t even considered those yet. Do they come in different sizes, too? I really haven’t gotten the bug to try cables yet. So, I guess that doesn’t seem all too pressing.

Anyway, any suggestions are welcome and would be fun to hear!

ooooh i don’t know…with HL having soooo much of their yarn on sale this week i would have a hard time not buying more yarn! but my LYS has everything in their store 25% off this week for a one time purchase (they won’t let me use the card more than once, how cruel is that! :stuck_out_tongue: ) so i think i will be able to bypass HL. How about a caddy of some sort to store your stuff in. They had a cool one there that i noticed yesterday that you could string your yarn though to keep it from tangling. of course they had all those 40% off last week too…lol.

How about a tote to carry your knitting in? Do they have knitting books there? A crochet needle or two for fixing mistakes or adding edging? Tapestry needle for weaving in ends? A binder or container for your patterns and ideas and keeping records of your FOs. Bins or baskets for your yarn. Closures, buttons, embellishments for your knits. Do you need something to block your knits on? Fabric for lining knitted bags?

Oh, these are all great suggestions!! I forgot to mention that I have a full complement of crochet hooks – I thought crocheting might be easier for the kids when we started this.

But I do like the organizer/tote idea. I really wanted to felt myself a tote, but I think an organizer for some of the small items that I keep losing in the bottom of my current bag would be good.

As for books: I really want one (or both) of the Cat Bordhi books – “The Treasury of Magical Knitting” and “The Second Treasury …” I don’t think they carry those @ H.L., but it bears looking into.

Is the yarn sale over? It seems like I always stumble across these things a day late. It must be a deficiency in my shopping gene.

nope the yarn sale starts today. all the yarn that they had on sale last week is still on sale this week (i stocked up on Sugar n Cream for 99 cents a piece!) The storage totes and bags aren’t on sale anymore though. but all their sales come back around eventually.

if you go to www.hobbylobby.com you can see their sale page. it is almost always up right at midnight sunday night.

Thanks, Brenda! I need to try & get over there this week, then! I am so severely addicted to yarn, it’s not even funny, but at least I know all of you here understand that.

lol…yeah. Ya know what is funny is that i have been an avid collector of just about everything my whole life. Most recently the collection has been bears of all sorts (but mostly Boyds.) My mother has been the typical mom through my years of collecting bears and saying “are you sure you can afford that?” uuuh…yes! anyway…lol…now when we go shopping she makes sure we go to at least one yarn store and hobby lobby and that i know all the sales that are going on. apparently yarn collecting coincides very well with her cross stitch collecting so THAT is okay! silly momma!

ooh and this is the woman who responded to “i don’t think i need more yarn right now” with “It isn’t always about NEEEEED!” lol…yeah well i don’t NEEEEEED the bears either silly woman! :stuck_out_tongue:

sigh i am so weak. so i went to my yarn sale that i found out about when i got home yesterday and i came home with a big ol’ bag o’ stuff. cuz ya know i needed more…and it is killing me to not start playing with it now. my boss seems to get a little pissy when i knit at my desk while i should be working though!

Before you use gift card money on dpn’s, please check out my thread about them! Following Amy’s “Make your own knitting needles!” tutorial, I made my own dpn’s using dowel rods. They were super easy, and super cheap.

Thanks for the tip … I had actually taken a pair of chopsticks and made two size 8 DPNs from them a while back when I needed to make an iCord. I was pretty happy with those, too, but I think I could stand to sand them a little more. I agree – it is quite a sense of accomplishment!

I know you said you have plenty of yarn, :XX: but HL is having a great yarn sale right now! I just got some yesterday…good prices.

I saw an ad for that sale yesterday. I’m trying very hard to discipline myself to use up the yarn I bought before I amass anymore, but it’s OH so tempting! I guess I just need to get knitting like crazy so I can justify going out to buy s’more!

lol…i tell myself that all the time too but i do think i need to run over there and get more of the Sugar n Cream stuff. now that i have finally gotten around to actually working on my first dishcloth i am finding i really like it and want a whole bunch of colors. I did my last scarf with a base of the orange SnC and the fuzzy Stars yarn…loved it…just thought it added a kinda cool texture in with the soft and fuzzy of the stars. too bad i didn’t get to keep that scarf long enough to take a picture of it…lol

You’ll use it eventually…turn to the darkside, Julie…the force is with you

lol…do you ever feel like you are encouraging other people to buy so you won’t have to? it is like why i want everybody to go to helloyarn.com on tuesdays before i can so the yarn will be gone when i get there i won’t have to buy it all. i just want the pictures to still be there so i can ogle the pretty yarn… :inlove:

I can’t believe how much I enjoyed knitting my first dishcloth. I’m working on a sweater right now, and I keep getting the urge to stop and make another dishcloth!! How weird is that? Anyway, I’m using Cotton Ease for the sweater, and have also really enjoyed working with that. I can imagine it would knit up into some nice light-weight tops of other styles, too.

OK… maybe I will pick up some more Sugar 'n Cream and Cotton Ease. :eyebrow:

Stop!! Stop!! I’m weakening!!! Must … have … more … YARN!

Yes, I too avoid helloyarn until later in the day… It’s just too tempting otherwise, but I do love  it when she lets you drool over what she created even though it’s sold.
