What Kind of Snakes Are These?

I know nothing about snakes, but I do know my husband is crazy. These were vipers he caught alive, help ID these?

I have no idea - but they sort of look like this snake.

Thanks, that DOES look like it.

Looks a lot like a rat snake. They’re harmless.

It had fangs though:

The pattern, head shape and color looks like copperhead to me.

I agree! And for the record…:ick: :passedout:

Walked into my office yesterday to fix a cup of coffee and there was a little bitty baby pigmy rattlesnake by the desk! Pitter patter and yikes!!! Everyone laughed at me but the little bitty ones have no control over the venom disbursement when they bite!

Doesn’t look harmless to me!!!

Doesn’t look harmless to me, either. That arrow shaped head looks like a poisonous species…quite possibly a copperhead.
Tell your DH to be VERY careful with it.

I think it looks like a rat snake too:

Oh - and here’s a link to Texas snakes I found. Don’t know how in depth it is:

Oh My Gosh!!! Those pictures send shivers down my spine! We do not have ANY snakes here at all. I don’t think I could do any gardening knowing something like THAT was lurking in the undergrowth.

ok - so here is a picture of a Trans-Pecos Copperhead common in Texas

If you notice the bands go all the way around, whereas the snake you show doesn’t really have bands at all - more patches. I do think its a rat snake; however, if it were me I would have left it alone - better safe than sorry

I live in Southern California and rattlesnakes are rally common - big uns!!! I’ve seen them quite often and give them wide berth. Haven’t found them in my yard yet - thank God - but as it gets hotter I am expecting them as I now live up in the hills amongst all the rocks.

evona,
Do rat snakes have fangs?

Yes, most do. Some are even known to have venom although it’s not powerful enough to be harmful to humans.

I’ve been bitten twice by copperheads and so have more than a passing familiarity with them. While the full body pics aren’t quite good enough for positive identification (too far away), I am almost positive that it isn’t a copperhead. Looks far more like the rat snake family to me.

The color bands look just like these to me

Ok, I just have to comment on that pic! The depth of field is great and the color, clarity and overall quality is just wow! What kind of camera do you have?? Totally OT, sorry…lol

"A Rat Snake has round pupils in it’s eyes, unlike the elliptical, “cat’s eye” pupils of the Copperhead."

Look at the closeup of the eye in the fang picture. It’s a copperhead.

I just know it’s one of those I do not like- a live one!!:teehee:

Demonica, the camera is a digital Canon EOS20. I’m still getting the hang of it, so when I do get a good pic like that it’s pure luck.
