What kind of cast on?

I’m making a buttonhole row - the pattern says to bind off one stitch and then cast on on stitch on the next row. What kind of cast on whould I use? Thanks! Deb

I tried the knitting cast on and it didn’t seem to work, unless I did it wrong. Grrr - I’m 2 rows away from a FO!
