So i have been using Karon’s Simply Soft yarn for making scarves since its so soft (thus the name lol) but it rolls like CRAZY even with blocking, so I was thinking that there may be a better yarn that is still not rough on the skin but wont roll in so much…
and it probably would be the same for gloves, but without the whole rolling problem, cuz that might help with gloves haha
If you’re doing stockinette without a border it will curl no matter what yarn you use. Blocking can help if you’re using wool, but even then it still has that tendency.
Wool or other animal fiber like alpaca is warmest, but if warmth isn’t a big thing for you then blends with bamboo or silk would be lovely. Soft cottons and blends are nice.
thanks im actually very allergic to wool but i have some bamboo silks already that i really like.
and im so mad cuz i have tried every blocking technique out there and i still have rolling problems… i finally fixed my edges problem with the loose stitches and that helps a little bit but i cant get my stockinette to stay flat for anything
Stockinette will not stay flat, even with blocking, no matter which fiber you use. It needs an edging put on, or other sts knit at the edges. It’s not the yarn that curls, but the stitch. Here’s an explanation why and what you can do with your knitting to counteract that.
As Jan mentioned above, your stockinette stitch scarves are rolling simply because that is what stockinette stitch does … it is not something you are doing wrong. Check out the sticky thread on stockinette at the top of this board for more info on why it rolls.
To avoid this rolling problem, you either need to use a stitch pattern that lies flat (ie. NOT stockinette), or you need to use another stitch pattern to border your stockinette (eg. you could do a border of garter, rib, seed stitch, etc.)
Hope this helps … keep up the good work! :knitting:
ETA: oops! looks like Suzeeq beat me to it! LOL
i think borders would help the most even though it still rolls somewhat… just not as much…
but i still would like to know what type of yarn you guys like to use for scarves and gloves and what not i grabbed my bamboo silk and im making a pair of gloves that way and im liking it but with scarves i tend to just use the karon simply soft.
I’ve just finished a lovely scarf for a friend done in baby bamboo using the feather and fan stitch. It drapes great and feels so soft and warm. I’m so impressed I’m going to make a few more for Christmas presents.
What I use depends on who it’s for. I can’t wear many wools or wool blends on my neck and shoulders so for myself I’d go for acrylic, silk or a blend of most anything not wool. My hands and feet are not as sensitive so I can use wool on them just fine. For other people I’d probably use wool if they need warmth and can tolerate it.
BTW…I’m making a sweater with Berroco Vintage which is a wool blend and so far I think it might be fine.
