What is a "back marker"?

I’m working on a neck-down sweater pattern, and am just finishing the neck yoke on double-point needles. There are five markers on the needles – one odd-colored one marking the start of the round, and four others spaced as directed. I have been following the instructions for increasing before and after each of the four markers, and now I’ve come to the instruction line that says: “Continue to work the last 2 rounds until there are 38 stitches between the back markers.”

Uh, which of the four are the “back markers”?? There is no explanation of what this means. Does it mean the first marker I come to after the beginning of the round, and then the last? (Sheesh, I think it would have been easier to say “38 stitches between the 2nd and 4th marker”, or whatever…)

Thank you to anyone who can help!!

Do you have any idea which section of your knitting is the back of the sweater? From my experience with neck down in the round sweaters, usually the beginning of round marker is at the back of the neck. I don’t know if this is the case in the sweater you are making, but if so then the back markers would be the two on either side of the beginning of round marker. Don’t quote me on that though, check out your pattern and see if it says anything like ‘beg of round is at back neck’ or something like that to indicate which section of the sweater is which.

Hi knitqueen,

Yes, the first odd-colored marker is the back of the neck. The other markers, however, were not evenly spaced. The instructions at the beginning of the first yoke round (with 40 stitches on the needles) were: k7, place marker, k6, place marker, k14, place marker, k6, place marker, k7.

Do you still think that most likely the “back markers” are the two closest to the odd-colored marker that is the beginning of round/back of neck? If so, then I still have some way to go to finish the yoke, after all…

Thank you!!

It seems that the stitches are not evenly spaced, but you have 7 knit stitches on either side of the back neck (beginning of round) marker for a total of 14 back stitches, 14 knit stitches which is the front of the sweater, and 6 knit stitches each for what will be the sleeves. So yes, the back markers are the markers two closest to the beginning of round marker.

Thank you!! You have saved my sweater! :cheering:

I would not have guessed the right ones, and would have ended up with a VERY odd looking sweater…
