What does "work back" mean in this context?

Pattern reads: Work across first 14 sts and place them on a st holder. (this is my ribbing) Workk back, decreasing 1 st at the end of this and every following alternate row 4 more times.

Looking at the photo of the pattern it looks like after I put the sts on the holder I should do a decrease with my very next stitches, knit to the end and do a decrease at the end at the end of the follwoing row.

In other words, the decreases should be done at the end of the row where the ribbing is, since by decreasing I am shaping the neckline. The sweater is a childs sweater, very boxy, so the sleves are not inset, but just sewn onto the main body of the sweater which is a box!

Does this make sense to anyone out there? I don’t know how to post a picture, which I know would help! EEEEEEEeeekkkkkkkkkk. Ok, i tried to attacht pic of sweater :crying:

It makes perfect sense. You put those garter stitches on the holder so you can incorporate them into the collar stitches later. In the meantime you’re working the shoulders with decreases to shape the neckline.

thanks for your reply, but i still don’t understand what is meant by the phrase “work back” :oo:

P.S. Why is there no “crying” Emoticon? LOL

:crying: Here ya go.

After you put the first stitches on the holder and finish the row, you turn and “work back” , decreasing at the end of the row, which will be your neckline.

They could have said, ‘put stitches on the holder, finish the row. Next row, work to end, decreasing at end of row, blah, blah, blah.’ Knitting patterns should be required to use the same language!

Hi GeeBee~
I have not done this, but I read what I think is the procedure in a free pattern I found at White Lies. Perhaps it will help clarify ‘work back’ for you. I think that it it means basically turning your work, and working back.

Hope it helps, nothing more frustrating than not understanding a pattern. Good luck.

Oh  :happydance: NOW I SEE! They should have said:

Work across first 14 sts and place them on a st holder finish the row, then work back, decreasing 1 st at the end of this and every following alternate row 4 more times.

I haven’t knit in 20 years, AND I was living in Australia then, so this pattern just has strange wording to me. Of course, maybe it’s just the 20 years and not WHERE the patterns were written that makes the difference LOL ("m also used to reading crochet patterns!)
