What does no st mean in a line of knitting

I am working on a pattern that shows in the line across, k1, then it says “no st”, then k1 again. What does the no st mean?

It means to skip that instruction and go to the next one.

But what do I do with that stitch? Do I slip it to the right needle and knit it on the way back?

You skip the instruction, and just knit the next st on the needle. So for k, no st, k, you knit 2 sts. The ‘no st’ is a way to account for stitches that are added later on and are just to make the chart square up.

Think of any square designated as “no stitch” as a place holder. It is not really a stitch at all, just there to make the chart work out. So just skip it and do the next real stitch however it says to.
