to complete this hat i think i’ll add a pom-pom and then have DD model it, HOWEVER i have 2 questions…
what did i do wrong/what do i need to do in the future to avoid the misaligned stripes seen in the photo? i simply changed colors at the beginning of a new row . i think i can fudge this when weaving in the ends, however what do i need to do in the future to avoid this?
also, i used a long tail cast on, and although it looks okay in the photo, it’s a little too tight for the brim. should i have used another cast on method for ribbing and/or do i need to cast on more loosely?
well you are actually knitting in a spiral when knitting in the round. that’s the reason why the stripes seem wonky. you can try the jogless jog to see if it works.
i sometimes cast on with either a bigger needle or two needles to make that cast on stretchier.
I agree with Brenda about the cast on. When I’m making something that needs to be loose, like the brim of a hat or the cuff of mittens/socks, I always cast onto two needles held together to make sure that it’s loose enough.
Also, a decent alternative to the ‘jogless jog’ technique, that I learned recently, is this: when you come to your colour change, knit the first stitch of the new round with the tail of the old colour AND the new working yarn held together. When you come back to that stitch on the following round, the two loops get worked as one, and then from the wrong side pull gently on the tail end of the old colour until the stitch on the right side disappears. Give it a try, it works!!
I just tried the 2-strand technique for a sleeve I’m knitting in the round. The pattern is knit flat, (Caryolyn from Knitty) but I was baulking at all the seaming, so converted the sleeves to dpns. It’s in 2-color stripes, 2 rows of each color, so I’m just carrying the yarn rather than joining each time. Is this why the job is still happening? I haven’t tried the jogless jog yet. Maybe this would work better? Any other suggestions?
(I didn’t notice the jogging until 18 rows into the sleeve, so I think I’m going to live with it anyway if I can’t remedy it for the rest of the sleeve).
Thanks. I really should have tried the JJ first, but it looked complicated! I’ve done a few rows and it looks like it’s working, although I have noticed the “seam” appearing. What genius though! Hope one day I’ll be able to figure out fixes like that! I think I’ll stay with it till the end of this sleeve, then see how it compares with the color jog part at the beginning. Guess it won’t be perfect either way, but it does beat having to seam up the sleeve afterwards, and for some reason I find dpns the easiest way to knit continental.
