Like the title says, what are the most common size’s for needles when your knitting socks. I want to buy some needles for socks from Carol OH, but Im not sure what sizes to buy. Thanks guys.

Depends on the weight of your yarn…but most fingering weight is size 1 or 2…
I’m knitting some fingering weight on size 3’s right now though…
Most of my sock knitting with fingering yarn is completed on sz. 0 (2.0mm) or sz 1 (2.5 mm). It all depends on the gauge you like to achive when you knit socks. I like to be at no more than 8 st./inch for the cuff and 9 stitches/inch for the heel and sole. If I’m putting the effort into a pair of socks, I want them to be very sturdy and firm, especially in the foot.

for fingering weight sock yarn, i refuse to use anything larger than a size 2. any size bigger than the 2 creates a very loose and flimsy fabric, and I like my socks to be a little sturdier than that. My prefered needle sizes for socks is 0 and 1. Going smaller than a 0 hurts my hands and you end up wanting a yarn weight smaller than fingering to get a decent fabric.
yep…for fingering weight I go with 1s or 2s
I’ve got a pair on size 2’s right now ( 
my addi turbos). I think, though, that for my next pair, I will work with 1’s or 0’s. I have some DPNs all the way down to 000, but I think that would make me crazy. I just suddenly have the urge to do something on tiny needles, though. One of those crazy knitterly urges.
I have some 000’s that I keep looking at…they came in a set of “sock needles,” but the only thing I can think of to use them for is a doily. For socks, I prefer 2’s or 3’s, although I’m making some socks in sportweight wool with size 4 DPNs. The smallest weight yarn I’ve used for socks is Magic Stripes (semi-quasi-pseudo-sportweight), so I don’t know what I’d use for laceweight.
Has anyone ever seen or wear Smartwool socks? Im looking to make socks that are merino wool and the equivelant of Smartwools Light Hikers (light hiking socks). My boyfriend and I wear nothing but Smartwool Light hikers all year round and I’m sick to death of paying $18 and up for a single pair of socks!!! We share socks and I wear a small and he is between a small and a medium so the socks are either too big for me or too small for him. He is begging me to make him “custom” wool socks. I told him only if he stops wearing and ruining mine and buys me needles to make them :twisted: hehe! He does this annoying thing were he rubs the bottom of his feet in his shoes all day and wears out the bottom of the socks and them I grab a pair and the bottoms all jacked and it drives me mad :wall:

i wear them on hikes, and my husband wears them every day.
i own two weights. one is heavier, for cold-weather stuff like snowshoeing, skiing and the like (we’re at 9000 feet northern new mexico), and the other is a “base layer,” which is ultra thin (to wick sweat and prevent rubbing on long hikes).
so when you say “lite hikers,” that’s what i think of. and those base-layer socks probably require something smaller than 0.

I use to work at REI for two years, and have been a hiker for years. Smartwool does have alot of different weight socks. Their socks liners (the wicking ones that you have) are amazing, but Im loking at making they what they call their Light hikers. Its their first weight for hikers and heavier socks. Then there goes mid-weight, heavy weight, expedition weight, walkers and skiing and snowboarding. All their socks just rock.
