I am planning, of course, to pick up some beautiful fibers to spin on my beautiful new wheel…What has everyone had luck with? On my spindle I have had a hard time drafting properly & I have never worked on a wheel at all so I want to purchase a fiber that would be good for a beginner. Any suggestions?
What are the best fibers to start with?
I would like to add to that question with where would one pick those rovings up?

Do a search in her store for brown sheep roving. It is SO cheap, and is wonderfully soft. The colors are fantastic, too. This is my first spinning yarn I used on my wheel, and it really is a dream to work with.
How much yarn comes from a pound of roving? (I understand this depends on the weight of the yarn spun…but if you had to make a guess.)
I’d like to know more on this question too. I just know that the weight in ounces of your roving will be the same weight of your yarn but that doesn’t help you in estimating the yardage.
Well, one skein of Lamb’s Pride worsted weight is 4 oz…so about 4 skeins of worsted weight in a pound of yarn. It is ALOT of yarn. I broke off a hunk from my huge ball of roving and spun it, and I was AMAZED. Definitely makes the yarn alot cheaper!

Vicki, I would stay away from merino wools and the more luxerious fibres until you’re comfortable with your technique. A coarser wool is generally better for starting out - like shetland, corridale, etc. Something with an average staple. How much you’ll get out of your roving will depend on your technique, the texture of the yarn, how you ply it, etc. But a pound will give you quite a bit. Have you got a niddy noddy yet? That can help you determine yardage once you’re done.
Thanks. That’s what I ended up getting. The lady at the Fold GAVE me two big bags of roving with my wheel. One is Romney and the other Lincoln/Silk. She said both were fairly easy to spin, but told me to start with the Romney. I am sure I will be busy for a while with this!
Two really good beginner wools are Romney and Border Leicester. I started with a Leicester myself… wool that I had actually cleaned and carded myself. And from that experience, I’ll say that beginners should start with prepared roving! lol
My all time favorite fibers for spinning are Blue Faced Leicester and Falkland Wool. The Blue Faced Leicester is probably a little more suitable for beginning spinning. Also, colonial wool, especially the blended color rovings, are nice. I order most of my stuff from Copper Moose.
