I’m making a tote bag. It says to "cast on 41 stitches and work base back and forth in seed stitch, working selvedge stitches in stockinette st as follows.
Then it says “row 1:K2, p1,(k1 p1) to last 2 stitches, k2.” It then goes on to describe more pattern stitches up to 58 rows. Could someone please tell me where these selvedge stitches are, and why this is included in the base of the bag? This is a pattern from the net, from “Knitty”, called BYOB, or bring your own bag.
Well, your pattern stitch is seed stitch which is k1, p1 and your pattern says:
“row 1:K2, p1,(k1 p1) to last 2 stitches, k2.”
. You may or may not notice that there is an extra stitch thrown in at the beginning and end of each row “k2, p1, (k1, p1)” the seed stitch is k1, p1 so the k2 makes for an extra stitch, that is your selvage stitch. And likewise at the end of the row where it says K2. Those stitches, which you want to keep in stockinette stitch on the right side (k on the RS, p on the WS), will be used for sewing the bag together.
Selvedge sts are the first and last ones of the row, and instead of doing them in seed stitch always knit them on the RS row and purl on the WS row.
Of course, it all seems so easy as soon as it is pointed out. Thankyou!!! Now I can start my project!
I have been knitting for about ten years and have knitted some really nice things, cables (not advanced) yo, but I can’t get beyond that into more advanced steps like lace or intricate designs an a cardigan border. It is still hard foro me to interpret some patterns. I would appreciate any help or feedback you can give. Elizabeth
It helps if you give an example (a few rows) of a pattern you have trouble with and why. Then we can explain it more specifically.
Pantera- if you are asking a question unrelated to the the topic you are in it’s best if you start a new thread. You’ll get more people helping that way.
