What Am I Doing Wrong AAHHGGG!

http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/free_patterns/heart-dk-hot-pad.php

I’ve been trying to knit this great heart double-sided hot pad and my heart isn’t coming out right! The pattern looks like squiggly lines and nothing like a heart!

If I’m reading the pattern right, each square = 2 stitches. If the first box is white then I use white thread and KNIT the first stitch. Then for the 2nd stitch, I PURL with red!!!

If the second box is RED, I knit with red thread and then purl with white.

I’m I doing the pattern correctly if I start at the far left of the first row and after reaching the end of that row, I begin at the far left of the 2nd row???

I’m thinking that maybe I’m missing something. After getting to the end of the first row, is there something I’m supposed to be knitting coming back before beginning the 2nd row?

I really want to knit this pattern! PLEASE HELP ME!!!

The odd rows are worked right to left and the even rows are worked left to right and they normally start at the bottom (didn’t check the pattern).

Is that a given way of knitting this kind of pattern? If I find another pattern like this of say a four leaf clover or whatever, I would start at the bottom of the chart and work up starting at the left side of the first row and when I get to the end of the first row I start knitting the second row from the right?

I will try it and see how it turns out!

Thanks!

Yes, this is standard for a chart. But the first row starts at the right, not the left.
