Welcome to the KnittingHelp forum! ...Introduce yourself!

Thank you for joining us and have fun working on this tank top!

Hi I am new to this site and would really appreciate some help. I have been knitting basic stuff for years and am just finishing a jumper for someone for Christmas but do NOT understand the decrease instructions!!
Help/advice very much be needed and appreciated! Decreasing on the collar of a raglan sleeve jumper - pattern says on the neck where I have 86 stitches - K5 k2tog [k13, k2tog] 5 times, k5 (80 stitches).
Which set of instructions am I repeating 5 times - the k5 t2tog or the k13, k2tog? I do not have enough stitches to do both. I don’t understand the second set of instructions as it just seems amiss.
It is a Women’s’ Weekly pattern for a man’s jumper and so far have found it relatively easy to follow but I am now stumped when it comes to finishing it.
PLEASE HELP!!

Hello
There are 6 decreases taking you from 86 to 80 stitches. Everything in [Square brackets] is repeated the number of times given outside the bracket.
K5, k2tog (that’s 1 dec)
Then
[K13, k2tog] all of this repeated 5 times (that’s 5 dec)
Then
K5
Total 6 decreases

You’re on deadline to finish, hope it goes well for you!

Welcome to the forum!
It’s the [k13, k2tog] that is repeated 5 times. That row requires 87sts. 7+75+5=87sts

Since you have 86sts, you might work the [k13,k2tog] 4 times and put a [k12,k2tog] in the sequence so that it works with 86sts. That will still leave you with 80sts.

K5 k2tog [k13, k2tog] 4times, [k12,k2tog], k5 (80 stitches).

Thank you so, so much.

Hi from Canada… I’m not a new knitter and never knew of his site until recently… I posted asking for help about a pattern that turned out to be written incorrectly and got immediate help. Without it I would’ve chucked the project altogether - the site is wonderful!

I’m so glad you joined us. We’re here to help with questions and comments. Love to see finished projects too.

Hello,

I’m newly registered member but I’ve been perusing this website off and on for several years now. As a self-taught novice knitter and recently retired, I now, very happily, have more time to dedicate myself to working on my hobbies, and knitting is at the top of my list. I just love creating useful, and hopefully beautiful, items out of raw materials. It gives me so much satisfaction. I’m currently working on a pair of vintage baby booties for my new baby granddaughter and I come here today to ask a question about the pattern I’m using, which has me totally stumped. Would this be the correct forum? Thanks :slightly_smiling_face: .

Welcome to KnittingHelp!
Congratulations on the new baby granddaughter. What better excuse to knit!
The best place to post a question or comment is in the “How to” or “Pattern Central” sections of the forum. Your question will get the most attention in either of those places.
Glad to have you with us.

Hi I am Tina and thank you for letting me join your forum I have only really knitted Mr Men toys, I have started to knit a pair of fingerless gloves, I am okay with reading the pattern but I am now stuck on this bit.

I have 46 stitches and am starting to shape the thumb gusset, the pattern says k21 (23:25) 18 (20:22) m1 k3 knit to end.

I understand except for the 18.

Any help would be appreciated before I pull my hair out

Welcome to KH!
What is the name and designer of your pattern?

Are there several different sizes for the gloves, 1st, 2nd, etc…?
You’re making the second size?
There may be an instruction left out before the “18” like p18. Usually there are M1s before and after the gusset.

Hi my name is Lynn. What a fun forum. I just was reading about how to change 4 ply in exchange for 8 ply and I may be asking a question that again you have answered. I received some Indiecita DK yarn for Christmas and I found a lovely pattern online. The yarn doesn’t say what ply it is so of course I just unraveled it, but the pattern is 8 ply. The pattern is partially written in cm which doesn’t help me much but I will figure it out. It is a sweater pattern using 4 or 5 different knitting patterns. If I double the quantity of balls that are being used for 8 ply will it be okay for the 4 ply?

Anybody in your forum from Colorado?
I still feel like a beginner when it comes to alterations like this.
Thanks - Lynn

Welcome to the forum!
What is the name of your pattern and designer?
Ply is not a reliable measure of yarn weight. The stitch gauge in sts/4inches or sts/10cm is a closer way to go about substituting yarns.

Maybe this is your yarn?

It’s a DK weight knitting at about 22sts/4inches. You can see how close this comes to the your pattern gauge.
Let us know your pattern information and we can try and help.
