I was working on a swatch and noticed that the stitches don’t look like typical v’s. This is the first time I’ve ever seen this. It’s like the left side of the v is a straight line. I took a pic. Kind of difficult to see cause it keeps curling but I think you can see it. Anyone know what’s happening?
Weird looking knit stitches
It’s not you, it’s the yarn. Seriously. I can’t remember what causes it but it’s a quality of the yarn.
Good to know. The yarn was one recommended by designer- drops merino extra fine.
As GrumpyGramma said, it’s the yarn. It’s a construction method called “s on s”.
It’s described in this article from YarnSub (scroll down to the seventh heading).

Yarn shops and yarn labels don’t tend to state state the construction of yarns, so it can be hard to know whether a yarn is s on s if you aren’t buying it in person. YarnSub usually has that information though if you want to check.
This article from Modern Daily Knitting is sort of relevant - it shows a singles, which does a similar thing to the shape of the knit stitches as your s on s.
Lovely colour!
This is gorgeous!
I was going to ask if this was the drops Merino extra fine but see you have already replied that it is - absolutely beautiful look on the swatch.
From what i understand it’s good quality yarn and oeko-tex certified which means it’s more animal, human and eco friendly than some other yarns.
I love the way the swatch looks and have been looking at this yarn, or the drops baby Merino for my next project. I was going to ask you what you thought of this yarn.
My current project is with an s on s plied yarn (sublime baby cashmere Merino silk) and I love it.
Great articles, thanks for sharing.
I agree with all of the above. Here’s another article with just the same look as your sample. The problem is in the direction of the twist to the yarn as it’s plied. The yarn you’re using is likely a z-twist.

I had a cardigan in Lamb’s Pride worsted from Brown Sheep that looks similar to your sample and I love it. Your swatch looks beautiful!
Salmonmac, I think this yarn is the s on s as kushami said. Interesting and informative article you limked, thank you. The z twist slants the opposite direction in the article and the s on s slants with a big right leg and almost straight column of left leg which is what I see in knittingigi’s swatch.
On yarn sub this yarn is listed as s on s too.
The look is beautiful in both the z and s on s. It creates such a lovely pattern and interesting play of light on the fabric, without even doing any fancy stitches.
Ah yes, thanks. S on s will do that. Nice looking but different.
Well since I haven’t started my project my opinion I guess could change, but it seems very soft. I like how tight the yarn appears which might be why it knits up like this. I really like the color — kind of a copper.
Thanks for all the information that you all have relayed. Didn’t know any of this but quite interesting.
