Wedding Shawl Pattern recommendations?

This has been an eventful Christmas: DD got engaged today, and I’m on a hunt for a lace weight wedding shawl. I have 16 hanks (7040 yards) of knitPicks Shadow Tonal in Pearlescent, so I have plenty of yarn for a change. I found this pattern on Ravelry, and think its pretty, but I’m undecided. Do any of you have some favorites you’d recommend?

Congratulations to the happy couple!

That’s a beautiful shawl and I think It would be a great pattern to use. I’ve not done anything like that so can’t make any recommendations. How long do you have to make it, do you know?

Congratulations are in order!

That shawl is exquisite, I don’t believe I’ve ever seen one prettier. One raveler posted that it took them two months to knit, when do they plan to marry?

Such happy news and what a wonderful event to look forward to.
I love the In Dreams Shawl, so delicate and lovely. It’ll be perfect in the Pearlescent tones.
What is your thinking about it? Is there something else you’d like in a pattern?

I thought the given pattern size would work nicely. If DD wants to use it as her veil, she could, but I didn’t think that far ahead, GG. Now I know why I ask you ladies about girly stuff. I’ve got the better part of a year, maybe more. Heaven know I’ll need it.

Just two months? Is that all? :roflhard: Mercifully the wedding will be after she is graduated from college. That’s summer 2014. At least I have some time to work on it!

TBH salmonmac, I’d found a pattern a few months back that I fell in love with, thought I’d bookmarked it, but didn’t. Isn’t that how it always goes? I can’t remember anything about it except that the designer made hers in purple silk. I have about 1500 yds of white silk that I got just to make it, and I forgot to bookmark the stinkin’ pattern! :waah:

As gorgeous as In Dreams is, its 2nd runner up to the one I can’t find. If I can’t find that purple one, it may well turn out to be what’s made.

Thanks for the congratulations everyone. What I really want is for DD to be my little 5 year old again, playing at getting married. Sigh. Does your child getting married always break your heart a little? Or am I the only weird one?

Ah, Charlotte, you’re not weird. My daughter got married so quickly after she met her match that I hardly had time to think. Somehow we managed to get her wedding dress made. I still wonder where that little girl went, 15 1/2 yrs. later. I miss the days when my children were small but I treasure the time now too.

Thanks GG!

As a cheeky aside, how about this as a wedding shawl? LOL

:roflhard:

OMG, Charlotte, you have a wicked sense of humor. I  it! I think you should make that one for the MIL-to-be, which one is up to you. My SIL would bust a gut over it.

Well, any reason to browse patterns on ravelry works for me  I found one that rivals Dreams here, and a couple of others, here, and here.

Do you remember anything else, maybe the shape?

Heaven knows I could have worn that one a couple of times myself. Don’t know of a wife who’d disagree.

But seriously, I just now bought the In Dreams pattern, and I love the song of the same name at the end of Fellowship of the Ring that inspired it. I’ll have to print it out and put it in the box with the shawl for DD who is a geek like me. :teehee:

When the cold of Winter comes
Starless night will cover day
In the veiling of the sun
We will walk in bitter rain

But in dreams
I (can) still hear your name
And in dreams
We will meet again

When the seas and mountains fall
And we come, to end of days
In the dark I hear a call
Calling me there
I will go there
And back again

Oh Claire! Those are beautiful! The lost pattern was unfortunately on a personal website/blog about blocking her silk lace project, and was triangular . My memory has fallen and it can’t get up!

Just one more, even though you’ve made your purchase.

This one is lovely, could it be the one?

Any chance you might find it in your browser history?

That’s just too pretty.

Arsenic and Old Lace appeal to my sense of … what? the absurd?

That is really, really close to it! You are amazing! How’d you do that, web search sensei??? :muah:

The only thing I truly dislike about buying most patterns online is that I can’t really get a sense of the pattern or special stitches used, so I had to buy the pattern to see if it’s workable or not.

We all have our knitting druthers. One of mine is that I loathe working nupps, popcorns, and anything like them. If I find anything like that in In Dreams, I’ll go to another pattern.

Sensei, you have provided me a wealth of beauties from which to choose. I can’t thank you enough! :notworthy:

ETA: and it’s bookmarked! :teehee:

Oh dear, wished I could. I’m one of those weirdos who clears cache & history to save space on my antiquated iPad1.

Arsenic and Old Lace appeal to my sense of … what? the absurd?

Tongue in cheek, I’d say sense of reality.

Still looking at pictures :inlove: this may be the above-mentioned shawl on a different blog:

Aeolian Shawl

I’ve seen this shawl before on ravelry, never realized it could be so beautiful. A fine weight may be the reason for this.

Claire, you absolutely rock! THAT’S IT! You are THE web search sensei extraordinaire! :notworthy: Even better, the pattern is free, free, free on knittyspin! Bookmark in place!!

<Insert your favorite scatological epithet here>!! 9 stitch nupps… do I get over myself with the whole nupp thing? Maybe they’re easier in lace weight thread?

ETA: and beads… ye gods! What say you all to this shawl in white mulberry silk with size 8 seed pearl beads?

I’m going to start :clink: now. Must steel up my courage.

Oh, but that sounds lovely! Please keep us updated.

Nupps are not so hard and they are just so darn adorable :inlove: There are only 90 of them and they are easier if you employ a few tricks.

A seven stitch nupp may be perfectly adequate, the k1 and yo’s on RS knitted loosely. On the wrong side, there are a couple of cheats, one involving a crochet hook.

I believe I read somewhere, 90 beads. I haven’t added beads to knitting…yet. I am actually quite anxious to try.

I say yes :cheering: :cheering: :cheering: That yarn and the pearl seed beads would be gorgeous. You can do it!
