Want to double knit my HP scarf

Hey all:

I am wanting to knit my HP scarf (off of the atypicallyknit.com site) using a pair of straight needles instead of circs. Is this possible? Someone showed me something that is looking like it is supposed to be double knitting, but all the resources I see are two color double knitting. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Katy

Well, you might be able to knit the scarf flat and then seam the side (matching the color changes). I don’t know if you can double knit it though… I would think the color changes would be reversed if you tried it, but someone with more experience might be able to answer that question better.

Amy has fabulous videos on double knitting!! Just follow what she says and use the same color for front and back. You can do this! It’s really fun!

Thanks guys! I will try it and get back to you!

You can do what is called tubular knitting, which makes a two-sided, non-curling stockinette on both sides fabric. Looks like double knitting. The difference is that with double knitting, you K1 with one color and P1 with the other ball of yarn or other color. With tubular knitting, you K1, yarn to front, slip one with yarn in front, yarn to back, K1 etc. You need an even number of stitches and end with slip one. Turn the work and repeat the same thing all over again, and this time the stitches you slipped on the other side will be knit, and the ones you knit before will be slipped. Then to bind off you k2 tog across and bind off at the same time. You can do this with one ball of yarn, which I also like. For a HP scarf, say you want the first stripe to be burgundy on both sides–just work with one ball of yarn. When you want to switch to gold, continue in the same manner with that one ball of yarn. This method is one of my faves!

Thanks Yvonne! That was exactly what I was looking for!

Forgot to say that the slipped stitches are done purlwise. I figure you know, but wanted to make sure.

Been making some “snugglies” for shelter cats, using yarn that’s been around for years, & the web site (link below) where I found the patterns had this one:

Reversible knit uses worsted weight yarn in two complimentary colors (one for each side) and a circular needle or two double-pointed needles.

Cast on an even number of stitches to desired width.

Row 1: Using Color A, *k1, yarn to back, sl 1 purlwise, yarn to front; rep from * to end. Return to beginning of row WITHOUT turning work.

Row 2: Using Color B, *yarn to back, sl 1 purlwise, yarn to front, p1; rep from * to end. TURN.

Row 3: Using Color B, work same as Row 1.

Row 4: Using Color A, work same as Row 2.

Repeat these 4 rows for pattern. Finish off.

I figured these not-too-large squares or rectangles would be a good way to “get my feet wet” with alot of techniques I haven’t tried before, and if I make a mistake or two, the cats won’t care…LOL.

Anyway, in following the above directions exactly…after 5 rows I’ve got about 200 some stitches on the needles & thinkin’ WHAT am I doing wrong??? I’m thinkin’ the person who submitted it, forgot to add the ‘yarn to back’ direction before knitting…or wait…maybe the ‘yarn to front’ and ‘yarn to back’ directions are reversed. eeek. The finished snuggly (just a flat square or rectangle of knitted/crocheted/sewn fabric) in this case is supposed to be one color on one side & a different color on the other, attached on the sides.

I’m gonna go & take that out & try again, but if you can help in straightening me out with the pattern directions, I’d sure appreciate it.

Thanks so much!

You folks are the best.

Diane

The directions for row 1 should read:

Using Color A, *k1, YARN TO FRONT, sl 1 purlwise,

YARN TO BACK; rep from * to end. Return to beginning

of row WITHOUT turning work.

Just did 4 rows and now it looks as though it may be going to work out! Really cool!

Goin out to shovel snow now <sigh>…
