Waffle stitch sweater question

I am knitting the Waffle Sweater by Chiaki Knit :Instructions for Row 3 (WS) P3, SM, [P2,(K2,P1) repeat to 1 st before marker, P1, slip marker] repeat 3 times, P3. My question is: is the P3 inside the bracket supposed to be included in the “repeat 3 times” instruction?

Bracket versus parenthesis always tend to make me question my logic…

Row 3 (WS) P3, SM, [P2,(K2,P1) repeat to 1 st before marker, P1, slip marker] repeat 3 times, P3.
Every thing in brackets is repeated 3 times including the P2 but not the P3s outside the brackets.
Lovely stitch pattern and sweater.
