Vents I find hard

Please help. Do you start at the bottom of a vent near the waistband when picking up stitches. I really cannot get it round my head how to complete vents. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

What is the name of your pattern and designer, please? It will help if we can see what you’re making.

King Cole 5749…. I am making the jumper

Can you quote the exact wording of that part of the instructions? It’s OK to post a few lines of a pattern, just not the whole things due to copyright.

RIGHT FRONT AND LEFT BACK VENT BORDERS
with right side facing, pick up and knit 27 stitches along side edge of vent and 13 sts along purl st of rib.
40 sts. Do not pick up over cast on sts

I do have a bit of an idea but a little confused.
Ty for your help.

2 of the vent bands begin at the top of the vent, the other 2 will start at the bottom of the ribbed hem and work up towards the top of the vent, the place the front and back meet.
For these two in your instruction start at the top of the vent and work down to the bottom of the hem.
If you zoom in a lot (sometimes online pics are useful rather than a printed pattern) you can just about see the border.
The green line is where the border goes on right front and shows direction of the pick up. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much. I am quite away off attempting them, but I will let you know
