Variegated yarn

Hello:

I recently bought some pretty variegated yarn. I realize that it is best to use a simple pattern to show off the yarn, but I cannot seem to find a knit pattern for an afghan that is not just garter or stockinette stitch. Can anyone give me a pattern for a simple knit afghan? Thank you!

Have you looked at Ravelry? What kind of pattern do you have in mind. I’m using some variegated yarn for an afghan using the one row scarf pattern, much wider of course. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/one-row-handspun-scarf I don’t feel like the pattern and yarn fight for dominance in mine. HTH YMMV

Hi - Thanks for the reply? How big is your afghan? How many cast on, etc. Could you possibly send pattern instructions? I like the scarf one - thank you!:knitting:

Mitered square afghans can be very pretty in variegated yarns. Could this one work for you?

The pattern: Cast on a multiple of 4.
Row 1: *knit 2, knit into the back of the next stitch, purl 1. Repeat from *
Row 2: Same as row 1
Every row is the same as row 1

I think it will be about 39" wide or so and it will be who knows how long. I was given some yarn and thought this would be a good way to use it up. I’ll either use all the yarn, maybe adding a border, or get sick and tired of it and quit. Whichever comes first.

Chevron patterns do well with variegated yarns too.

Thank you - btw, how many did you cast on? Thanks to all!

I’m sorry but I don’t remember how many I cast on. When I get it out again I could count. I worked a swatch large enough to get an idea of my gauge and then figured out a multiple of 4 to cast on to get to about 38" or so. I wasn’t too concerned about exact measurements.

Thank you ladies!

GG - This is a great pattern, really shows off the yarn. I’m off to download it.

Hey GC - I refined the search for the one-row scarf on ravelry, searching for afghans. You can check project notes from people that have knitted these projects to get an idea of how many stitches you want to cast on.

Thank you to all who replied - take care!

There are afghan projects with the one row to look at? Cool. I’ll try to get a photo to show you what I have going should anyone be interested but it could be a few days.

Feather & Fan, The yarn then plays up the pattern and is really pretty.

I’ve used the One Row pattern for dishcloths, too!

Here’s an idea for an afghan:

Cast on anything with a multiple of 10: 70, 80, 90, etc…

Row 1: K10, P10 across
Row 2: Knit the Knits and Purl the Purls

Do this for 10 rows THEN:
Row 11: Purl 10, K10 across
Row 12: Knit the Knits and Purl the Purls

Alternate the blocks until the desired length.

Something else to think about!
