Using skeins from different dye lots

Hi, looking for some advice please - I’m using some Malabrigo 100% merino sock yarn (no dye lot). I need 3 skeins for one half of the project (purl soho half and half triangle wrap) but only managed to buy 2 at once from my local yarn shop and from what I presume was the same batch. I have the third skein from a different supplier which does have slight variation as I expected. It is a fairly mottled yarn rather than a solid colour but there definitely is a difference, only slight and probably not helped by my amateur winding skills as I’ve wound it a lot looser than the one my friend wound for me so I think that’s making it look different too. My question is: do you all use them intermittently ie a bit from one then another (lots more ends to weave in) or would you use them as full skeins and mix the different skein into the middle.

Probably seems a simple question to you experienced people but humour me please

Edited as Creations suggested to say, I’m making the half and half triangle wrap from the Purl Soho pattern.

Thank you

Hello
I recently had a problem with balls from the same dye lot being different colours and textures.
I had this thread which might be of help to you as there are several ideas of how to work with the yarn of different lots.

What I don’t recommend is just switching mid knitting, on my project the change was very obvious.
It may be helpful to know what you want to make as there may be additional tips for certain projects.

One thing you can do is alternate the two different yarns. Working back and forth, work 2 rows with one yarn, two rows with the other. In the round you could do one or two rounds with each.
Malabrigo yarn does have a mottled appearance which is part of its attraction. It’ll be very nice in the half triangle pattern. How were you thinking of working the wrap? Could you alternate skeins through the center portion?

Hey thank you both Creations and Salmonac for your help and it was so very helpful. Really sorry the awful experience you had Creations with the sweater you were knitting, how upsetting. Well I’ve followed the link you gave to the previous post of dye lot problem, then the link that was in there to a tube video, then utube helpfully directed me to https://youtu.be/FrKy201wkj8 ‘watch Barbara knit’ and explained ‘fade’ too.
I’m so glad I posted here this evening - what a great site.
Salmonac I’m knitting it as per pattern of two half triangles each in a Malabrigo colour which I’m hoping will look great for my red haired daughter.
Thank you.

these are the colours I’m using https://www.woolstack.co.uk/malabrigo-sock-yarn-playa/ and https://www.woolstack.co.uk/malabrigo-mechita-yarn-glitter-048/

it isn’t on the round but I’m going to do exactly as you say. I’m not sure what you mean by alternating through the centre portion as its then I change colour for the 2nd triangle and luckily I have all the skeins from the same batch.

OK, good plan. I thought you were only knitting with one color. Malabrigo yarns are so gorgeous to wear and so soft and lovely to knit.

Glad you found some of it helpful.
My own project has been salvaged and whilst it will never be my favourite cardigan it will be wearable which is a good result considering the yarn problem. I’m seaming the last bit now. Everyone here was so helpful and supportive.

As suggested, if you work 2 rows of one skein and 2 rows of another, you can carry the yarn up the side without generating a lot of ends, if that works for this pattern. Not sure it was clear that this eliminates cutting the yarn.

Thank you. Unfortunately on this edge I can’t carry the colour as the end finishes with 3 slip stitches and the other end is a short row turn.

I alternating the skeins as suggested though.

Many thanks people for your time to help here - it been appreciated.
