Understanding "Patt 3 rows as set"

Hello there,

I’m currently working on a Debbie Bliss reversible hat from “Essential Baby”. I’m a bit baffled by the instruction to “Patt 3 rows as set”. It crops up in the following context:

Knit 1st/2nd row pattern for 14 cm
1st dec row (instructions) Patt 3 rows as set
2nd dec rown (instructions) Patt 3 rows as set
3rd dec row (instructions) Patt 3 rows as set

I have googled this extensively to no avail. Does it mean that, once I have knitted my initial 14cm I should knit the 1st decreasing row for 3 rows, then the 2nd decreasing row for 3 rows and then the 3rd decreasing row for 3 rows?

This is all I can really think of, but I don’t want to go ahead until I’m sure and unfortunately there isn’t much of a clue in the book.

I haven’t typed out all the instructions as I didn’t think they were needed, but I can do if they are required.

Many thanks!

No, when you work rows ‘as set’ or ‘even’ you work in the stitch pattern with no incs or decs. So here you’re doing a dec row, work 3 rows in pattern, another dec row, another 3 rows. It would be the same as - continue in pattern, decreasing every 4th row.

Hi Sue,
Thanks so much for the swift response! Just so I am 100% clear (I need to be as I am knitting to a tight deadline!), can I just confirm that I knit as follows:

1st dec row (with decrease)
1st dec row (ignoring the decrease)
1st dec row (ignoring the decrease)
1st dec row (ignoring the decrease)

2nd dec row (with decrease)
2nd dec row (ignoring the decrease)
2nd dec row (ignoring the decrease)
2nd dec row (ignoring the decrease)

3rd dec row (with decrease)
3rd dec row (ignoring the decrease)
3rd dec row (ignoring the decrease)
3rd dec row (ignoring the decrease)

Again, many thanks. My lovely husband promised a friend I would knit something for his baby, due in May. He returned home last week to say he had misheard and it isn’t due in May, it is due next week! So I am trying to get it sorted in my head as soon as possible :roflhard:

I think you’ve got it. You can’t really call the rows between the actual dec rows dec rows too because they’re not. So dec on row 1, work 3 more rows in the pattern stitch (the dec will be just a single st of knit or purl). Do the next dec row, work 3 rows. etc.

Brilliant, thank you!
