Hi!
So I want to knit a sweater where it says to knit the collar in 4mm needles and then the other part in 5mm. I get gauge on 5.5mm needles. What size needle do I use for the collar since the pattern requires two different size needles?
Thank you
Welcome to the forum!
What is the name of your pattern and designer?
The 4mm might still work but you could go up to a 4.5mm for the collar depending on the stitch pattern.
Hi
Thank you, it’s called the Grace sweater by Kim Hargreaves. I was thinking maybe go up to a 4.5mm… will give it a shot, thanks ![]()
Lovely!
If you still have your swatch you could try 4 mm on one end and 4.5 mm in the other and see which rib you like best, one may look nicer than the other, test both for stretchiness too. If there is a schematic or measurement given for the neck width you can also check your rib swatches to see which comes closest to the goal size (same as calculating your fabric gauge, measure 5cm or 10 cm and multiply for the full stitch count across the neck), although you might easily decide which works best with the swatch fabric just by looking and feeling it.
I spend way too long swatching various ribs!
Thank you! I just tried the 4.5mm and it’s looking good so far
Hi! Since you get gauge with 5.5mm needles, you might want to go down one size from your usual adjustment for the collar. If you normally need to use 5.5mm to match a 5mm gauge, try using 4.5mm for a 4mm gauge. It’s always a good idea to knit a small swatch with the 4.5mm needles to make sure it works for your tension. Happy knitting!
