I am knitting a rug (my second one) with 3 cones of bulky cotton yarn. I love the process and the result is luxurious, but it seems no matter what I do, the strands of yarn just keep twisting and I spend as much time “unknarling” as knitting. I’m sure someone out there has come up with an ingenious way to prevent this problem. Thanks.
Unfortunately, there is no magic way to keep strands from twisting together if you are doing intarsia. You will simply have to untangle when necessary. However, if you are working with multiple strands to increase the thickness of your work, then the twisting doesn’t matter. Just knit as the strands as they come.
Tell us more about what you are doing? Are you working with with the 3 strands held together? Or what? What kind of knitting are you doing, as Michaele said, is it intarsia or what?
Recently I was crocheting with some cotton Knit/Cro Sheen with a metallic tread in it (don’t know if that was part of the problem). I was working it right off the ball and right from the git go it was kinking and looping back on itself terribly. I was working with 2 strands of it, one from each of two balls, but even alone it wanted to do this. My husband figured out a Rube Goldburg device that helped a lot, but didn’t entirely solve it. Is this the kind of “twisting” you are up against, or is it just the yarns getting tangled around each other as you change colors?
If you’re using the 3 strands at once, put them in separate containers - boxes, baggies, bowls. Then watch how you turn at the end of the row; if you always turn the same direction that’ll twist them even more.
