Twisted Garter stitch

This was in a pattern but I am not sure what they mean can someone explain this?

PATTERN STITCHES
Twisted Garter St: Knit every st through back loop across row.
St st: Knit on RS row, purl on WS rows.

Garter stitch is knit every row, but you are supposed to do all the knitting through the back loop. As a stitch sits on the left needle waiting to be knit it has a leg on the near side of the needle and one on the far side of the needle. You are going to knit into the back leg instead of the front one like normal. It’s actually more like the way you insert the needle for a normal purl stitch, but instead of inserting the needle into the front leg of the stitch like you do to purl, insert the needle, as if to purl, but behind the needle, in the back leg.

I’ve never seen twisted purl done, but that is what it is telling you to do. I hope that helps.

At some point in your pattern, it will tell you to do the twisted garter stitch for however many rows. This is explaining to you what twisted garter stitch is. What you will do is knit through the back loop of the stitches instead of the front. So, you’ll insert your needle through the back loop from right to left (if you turn the work around in your hands when you do this, you can see how this looks exactly how it does when you insert your needle to knit when you’re on the front side) and then you’ll hook your yarn like normal and pull it through. What this does is twists the stitches as you knit them. I hope this helps.

Yep, and it’s also explaining what stockinette stitch is, which you’ll do at some other place in the pattern. When you do, don’t twist either the knit or the purl stitches, that’s just for the garter stitch part.
