I’m knitting a 1x1 ribbed beanie with fitted crown. Turned up brim. No pattern. Because the brim is turned up, the ws shows for the brim part. Is there any way to avoid this?
I’m sure there is. What pattern did you use? You might consider folding the brim to the inside and stitching it in place if you expect to always have it folded. One thing that works on some hats is a double brim that’s knit to twice the brim length then folded and joined on the wrong side. I like to do rib on the inside and whatever I’m doing for the rest of the hat on the public side.
ETA I found this video which might interest you. It shows what I tried to explain.
Doesn’t 1x1 ribbing look the same on the inside as on the outside, or am I missing something?
Maybe that the 1 x 1 rib doesn’t align the same when turned up?
You can make 1 x 1 for the WS first then on a fold row shift the rib 1 st along so you purl over knits and knit over purls so that when turned up the rib aligns.
But I’m just guessing about what the problem is.
What GG said seems good, to turn the brim to the inside.
Yes. But, using longtail cast on, I don’t like the way it looks on the ws. Using tubular/provisional cast on, though, the ws looks better to me.
Oh, thank you. I’m not using a pattern. Just using gauge swatch and YouTube for the downward decreases. The person I’m knitting it for wants to be able to fold the brim up. I’ll ask if a double brim suits. Otherwise, I’ll use the tubular/provisional cast on, which, to my mind, looks better on the ws.
Oh, my, I didn’t even think of that problem. Thank you. Now I’ll know what to do if that happens. My problem was, using the longtail cast on, I didn’t like how it looked on the ws.
Different cast on methods do give different results and everyone has their own preference. I used a “new” cast on for my last couple of projects which I loved, a slip knot cast on which is brilliantly stretchy for rib, apart from being very stretchy it is otherwise bland compared to other cast on methods.
Enjoy working your hat.
Thank you. There’s so much information out there, but so much is just learning from trial and error. Another cast on to try.
Another cast on to check out is Old German/Norwegian twisted cast on in pattern. I like it a lot.
Yes. I used this for the socks I knitted. It looks good on the ws.
Another question, but about gauge. I used 85% negative ease, which gave me 124 stitches, using 10 ply yarn, for a 59cm head (2.5 st/cm). But, I’ve noticed on here and online, that 80 stitches is considered to be about right for an adult-sized head, using 10 ply. Have I missed a step?
Does the hat fit the intended head? That’s what matters. For me 80 st using worsted/Aran isn’t enough to fit an adult head. I’m American and don’t know what 10 ply translates to for me. I recognize 4 ply as fingering, is that right? I say worsted, you might say Aran for the same yarn.
Yes. Sorry, should have said, 10 ply is aran or worsted. Thank you for replying. I’ll stick with the 124 stitches.
Oh dear, just realised how rude my reply must have sounded. Yes, rib 1x1 is same both sides. Nothing missing on your part, just a badly worded question. Please forgive me.
That’s my fave! Looks great on either side, stretchy but not TOO stretchy, etc. Took me a while to catch on to the purlwise version, but thanks to YouTube, I finally got it.
I didn’t read it as rude, so don’t worry.
That’s fine. I forget to include cm measurements with my US needle sizes, etc. Now I know what 10 ply is…I hope I remember when I see it again. Thanks for the info.
I love that we can ask questions about questions and we all figure it out eventually. I think we’d do the same if we were sitting together with our knitting and tea or coffee.
Exactly. Like sitting together and just being able to relax, knit, ask a question, get another coffee.
