Hi there, I’m knitting a babies cardigan and have decided I would like to put a hood on it instead of a collar. Are there any set methods to do this or can I just increase my stitches on the next row after picking up the stitches?
There are a couple of ways to do this. You can knit the hood separately and attach it similar to this pullover.
Or you can pick up sts around the neck like this one.

That link may be a good one to try. I also read somewhere that when the stitches have been picked up, you can increase on the next row by 10/20% depending on the cardigan size (mines 0-3 months)
Yes, you can always adjust on the next row depending on how full you want the hood to be. You’ll just have to play around with this a bit. It may be useful to put a lifeline in after you pick up sts so that you don’t have to keep repeating that initial pick up.
I’ve adjusted up or down on the second row of a collar even when there’s no hoodie involved. It simplifies the process of picking up sts.
Not wanting to sound daft, what’s a lifeline??
Ah, such a good question.
It makes it much easier to go back to a row and put those sts on the needle without dropping any.
Ahhhh I see, will remember and give it a go. I have been knitting for many years and never heard of that trick, though I have threaded a spare needle through if I had to undo part of something. Thank you so much for your help
Let us know how it goes. We’d love to see a photo!
Will do, have just finished the buttonbands and started the hood, which is working out easier than the button bands did
Not finished yet but am pleased with the results. Increased the stitches (59) by 15% Then did some decorative increases on the back. Will post another pic when finished
Erm, don’t know why it’s upside down
That’s looking very nice. The hood looks nice and full. Love the color.
Just needs buttons, a wash and pulling into shape, really pleased with how the hood has turned out. The colour is apple green, nice fresh colour
Very well done. I’m sure the recipient will love it and look adorable.
