Hi I’m judyj or just plain Judy
I have been following knitting help (do I say “the blog”?)for a while but have had some struggles with the technology so this is my first post - well sort of.
I think this is a wonderful…er… site and thank the community for all the insights.
I would like to contribute something. Yesterday I experimented with tubular casts ons for 1x1 rib flat. I did two provisional cast ons and I am going to try to send photos. The swatch at the top is the provisional CO where you knit a few rows st st in scrap yarn then a few more in your project yarn then on the purl side pick up the stitches from the first row. The middle swatch is with the crochet hook method and at the bottom is just long tail cast on to compare. I think the top one is neatest but the crochet method has the most stretch although I did use a very large crochet hook. There is plenty of stretch in the top swatch.
Tubular casts ons and introducing myself
Thanks very much for the comparison. I love the tubular cast on and bind off too. Did you crochet a chain or use the crochet hook plus knitting needle for the crochet cast on?
Yes I have corrected my wording in a second post. One of the videos I watched suggested using a much larger knitting needle to crochet over.
Thank you for the tutorial you sent. I used it for the swatch in the middle. I don’t have a working computer at the moment but I can watch YouTube on my television. All of the videos that came up for the yo method were for knitting in the round so the first time the knit and purl stitches were reversed in the instructions and I wasn’t sure whether I was getting it right.
Correction to my previous post. When I was referring to the middle swatch in the picture I said crochet hook when I should have said knitting needle that the provisional stitches are crocheted over.
Judy
The top one looks very neat. I have tried tubular cast-ons once or twice a few years ago but they ended up too loose or too tight.
About time for me to give it another bash!
Do you have a project in mind to put your lovely cast-on into practice?
Gosh that top one is beautiful isn’t it?
It’s great to see the comparison like this, thanks.
I’m amazed I can get excited by a cast on method haha! Never done this one myself but it is so lovely I ought to try to do it.
