Trouble with Purl for newbie!

Hello everyone,

I’m a total newbie. Been teaching myself the last few days and loving it but…purl is tricky. Every time I get to the end of the row, the very last stitch is baggie. It’s almost like it’s stretched out and I can’t find a way to tighten it. The other stitches look ok to me, it’s just the end of the row. I have tried casting on and re doing the rows for practice many times and it’s still the same result. Anyone know what I mean? I appreciate any help.

Thanks.

Hi and welcome to KH!!

This happens a lot when you first start out knitting…the first st will be a little big looking…you can try pulling the first 2 sts tighter when you knit them that would prolly help some…the other will come over time and after you get your tension down :happydance:

If you are ripping it out and restarting every time you see this…STOP! That loop often goes way after a few rows on it’s own, but getting the correct tension takes lots of practice. Cast on however many you want then start knitting.

Stockinette (knit a row, purl a row repeating) curls naturally so if you want it to lay flat you’ll need to have the first several rows and the sides in garter stitch which is all knit stitches.

BTW… I sometimes get a larger loop even now at the end of the first row, but it always seems to go away.

The loose stitch is occurring at the end of EVERY row. And I am unable to tighten it up -it’s like the yarn it is connected to is already knit in).

I have tried just slipping the stitch but then I ended up with smaller sides.

It’s kind of a mystery as to why it’s only the end stitch and why it’s every row!
