Hi, I am trying to knit Childrens Neck Warmers (Polo Neck) ON STRAIGHT NEEDLES but unable to find a pattern as they all use circular needles. I did try to make up a pattern but had to give up as it did not work out. Any help would be welcome. Thanks
Maybe something like this? https://www.etsy.com/listing/757430795/childs-neck-warmer-knitting-pattern-dk?gpla=1&gao=1& It’s not really polo-style, though. Or you could just knit a wide band, long enough to go around their neck, and then seam it up the back.
I don’t know what a polo neck warmer is. Do you have something similar to this in mind?
I don’t know if you’d have to join Ravelry (free! and no spam from it so if you’re not signed up, do) to see this but you might find something here.
https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#craft=knitting&photo=yes&pa=worked-flat&availability=free&query=neck%20warmer&sort=best&view=large_photos
I limited the search to free patterns. I didn’t check to see which ones are actually knit flat. If you have a pattern you like we might be able to help you convert it to flat knitting on straight needles or come up with a similar pattern you like.
Hi, many thanks for sending me the Ravelry link. I found an ideal child neck warmer. Pattern Drops 0-1022 Honey Bunny Neck Warmer using straight needles BUT, there’s always a but, it also uses Double Pointed Needles - as I do not have these can I use ordinary instead?? Regards Jean13
The style @GrumpyGramma (unfortunately this is crochet) has linked is similar to the one I knit flat and seamed, no pattern although I could try to explain.
If you like the look of this one I can change it to flat knit for you? (And anyone who disagrees with my method is very welcome to chip in and add their thoughts)
It would be an easy one to change to flat knit.
Thanks for replying. Regards J13
There must be a way to make one like this flat but it is beyond my ability to work it out just because the shoulders are all joined… (it is front bottom up, neck hole, then back top down, all in one and the double pointed are for in the round neck)…
…hmm you could knit 2 fronts instead of all in one, then seam one shoulder leaving the other open to keep the work flat then pick up and knit the rib flat and then seam the shoulder and polo neck. So yes possible but I might need help from others to really work this one out for you.
This is crochet and I see no mention of using needles.
Maybe this one? It’s knitted flat which I think is what you want.
It’s just the hat that’s crochet. The neck warmer is knitted uses double pointed for the rib neck.
You found one! Whoop whoop!
Edited to add - scrap that, this is also double pointed needles in the round for the neck.
Oi. I looked and missed that. I wonder if we could figure out how to work it flat. I’d bet that salmonmac can.
@Jean13 - Do you knit in the round with circulars? Or do you not knit in the round at all? Patterns that specify dpn can be worked on circulars. There are magic loop, two circulars, and traveling loop for small diameter tubes on long needles. Which is the better choice depends on the knitter and needles available. Right now I’m working on toes for tabi socks (foot mittens ) using magic loop.
Hi, unfortunately I cannot use circulars - tried many times but they baffle me?
I think I will try and do my own pattern with two needles and no DPN’s using a sweater pattern to convert - trial and error. I knit for charity and thought children’s neck warmers would be a change. Your foot mittens sound great!! JX
I was thinking you could use a sweater pattern to figure it out. I’m sure there are a lot of flat knit with turtleneck sweater patterns available. You could do the bib part by a pattern, if one them is knit flat, then do the turtleneck from a sweater. I see in my mind how to do it, with seamed shoulders. The turtleneck could be knit and seamed to the neckline. I think I’m rambling.
Yes, good idea I will try this. I have spent hours on YouTube searching but no luck so think I’ll have to sit and knit and try and sort it out. Why do all patterns say use circulars?? OK I should try to use them but I think I am too old and set in my ways now
ha ha!! Will let you know IF I figure a pattern out. Now I bet I cannot find a turtle neck sweater for a 2 year old with my luck???
Regards Jx
Jean, you do such a good job knitting for charity, I don’t want anything to hold you back!
Here is the knit flat version of Drops Trailhead neckwarmer 47- 23
I have written this for the first size, age 2 years, but I can write it for another size too if you have a preference.
Overview of the changes made:
For each size the original cast on number is changed by adding 2 sts.
The first and last stitch of each row of the neck section is the selvedge which will be used to seam the piece at the end, these are worked as purl on the right side and knit on the wrong side.
At the divide for front and back, on the RS cast off 1 st purlwise (selvedge), work the same number of stitches as given in the pattern for the chosen size, cast off 1 st purlwise, work the same number of stitches as in the pattern, cast off last stitch purlwise (selvedge).
Work the rest of the pattern as given.
Seam selvedges together.
Pattern for age 2 years:
DK yarn, 4mm needle.
Worked flat from top down.
First the neck is worked, then the back and front are worked separately, finally the neck is seamed.
Cast on loosely 80 sts
If you prefer to cast on in pattern then follow pattern for row 2 for a rib cast on which will provide a stretchy edge.
Row 1 right side. P1, (k1, p1) to last stitch, p1
Row 2 wrong side. K1, (p1, k1) to last stitch, k1
Repeat rows 1 and 2 for 8 cm
End with a wrong side row
Divide for front and back
Right side. Bind off 1 st purlwise, (k1, p1) 19 times (38 stitches), bind off 1 st purlwise, (k1, p1) 19 times (38 stitches), bind off last 2 sts purlwise
Place front 38 sts on hold
Work Back 38 sts
Wrong side. Work rib as before, knit the knits purl the purls
Next row. Work 2 edge sts in garter stitch (knit every row), work 34 sts in rib as before, work last 2 edge sts in garter stitch.
Continue for 10 cm.
Bind off in pattern.
Work Front 38 sts
Replace 38 sts for front onto needle.
Work as for Back with one wrong side row then with 2 edge sts in garter stitch
Make up
Join neck inside 1 st each edge, this uses up the additional 2 stitches which were added for selvedge.
Block or wash
Please let me know how you get on or if there is another size you would like typed up.
