Top-down, heel flap sock heels - too narrow?

I just finished my first sock (:yay: ) BUT, the heel part doesn’t fit right. It’s as if it’s too narrow for my big wide foot (I really do have wide feet, and they’re short too). I used the pattern Freya and I wonder if the problem is worse because the cables continue down the heel, so that my heel should be “cupped” Does that make sense? Perhaps next time I need to pick a pattern, or adjust for just a stockinette or even ribbed heel? I love this one enough to knit it’s mate, I might just have to wear shoes with them to keep the heel from being wonky.

ohhh, one last thought - I also have nice, sturdy, big thick ankles - that could be exacerbating the issue, maybe?

That’s a really pretty sock! I’m not sure how to correct the problem with that pattern.

I also have wide feet and found that my instep is kind of high so the sock was tight from the bottom of the heel across the top of my foot. I corrected it by making the heel flap longer by about 1/2 to 5/8 in and then I picked up more stitches. The resulting gusset is longer which means it takes longer to narrow down so it makes it larger in that area. You could also not completely work the gusset leaving more stitches to work the foot.

Thanks Jan. I think the next sock pattern I knit, I’ll remember those.
