I’m knitting the “Top Brume” by stephaline_made, following her YouTube tutorial. I’d like to modify the straps so that they’re adjustable and can be tied in a knot on top of the shoulders. This means I would need to knit straps on both the front and back of the top.
Would the best approach be to cast off the back of the top first and then knit the back straps separately?
I’ve tried looking for a tutorial on YouTube but haven’t been able to find one. I’d really appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thank you so much for your help!

You could do that, cast off the back then make straps separately and sew them on.
Or you can cast off the back then pick up stitches to work the strap without sewing it on (looks like the front begins with 5 sts and increased to 6 so I’d pick up 5 then increase to 6 on the first row after the pick up).
Or when casting off the back you could instead, work 5, cast off to last 5, work 5. This leaves 5 live sts each end of the row which can be worked as the front straps were. The yarn would already be joined at the left so work that one first (increasing to 6 sts like the font straps) and place the other 5 sts onto a holder or safety pin until later (then use a second ball of yarn to work that second strap, like the front). All 4 straps can be kept on hold with yarn balls attached whilst you decide how long you want them to be.
Any of these would work, it just depends what your preference is.
At the top of the left shoulder, I have 5 stitches remaining. Should I increase this to 6 stitches or decrease it to 4? I’ve seen an online tutorial where the knitter picks up stitches from both the front and the back, giving her 12 stitches in total.
In my case, the 5 stitches are still on my needles, so I assume I would need to pick up corresponding stitches from the back to create that rounded cord effect. Does that sound right?
My pattern says:
Row 1: Knit 3, inc, knit 2
Row 2: (k1, place yarn in front and slip stitch)x 3
Turn and repeat row 2 until you get the desired length
Sorry if this is a bit confusing; this will be my first time attempting this!
If you have followed the strap instruction for the front then I’d advise increasing the 5 to 6 like you did for the front, as it says in the pattern. It is not an icord but it is a narrow piece of double knitting which makes a tube like an icord but worked differently. It is a nice method.
Or you can make icords with the number of stitches you want. As it’s your top you get to decide how wide you’d like them.
Icords can be made independently from the top, you can try out different sizes to decide which you prefer and then either pick up from the top or work separately and sew them on.
