OK, I’m new to knitting and I’ve been reading a lot of these posts and the one thing I can’t figure out is: How on earth do I cast on 100 stitches to a 14 inch (or shorter) needle? Do I use one of those circular ones? I’m gonna start with just a simple shawl pattern with no slips, increases or decreases and when I get to the end I’ll watch the video for binding off again…:knitting:
Yes, a circular needle would make it much easier.
Thank you. So I would use two circulars using them as sort holding lines for the work as it gets transfered from one to the other?

No, use only one. The two ndls are connected by the cable which is where the sts sit. (Allows you to work more sts. Pretend you’re working with two very long ndls connected by a string.) Just switch the ndls in your hands as you would reg straights.

Or 2 short needles connected by a cord…
The cord holds about twice as many sts as a straight needle the same size so you can work with them comfortably.
When working flat on circulars I either like a long cord (40"+) or to use two cords.
Unless it’s bulky yarn you can probably fit 100 stitches on 14", they squish.
It’s been a while since I used straights but I know I fit way over 100 stitches (6.5’) on a crochet on the double hook that is 18" without a problem of them falling off the other end.
One of my first things was a hat on a 16" circular and DPNs with around 100 stitches.
Right now I have a 118 stitch sweater panel that I’m sure would squish on 14".
I prefer shorter cables. I am making a sweater with 200 stitches on a 32 and it’s fine.
Yes, I would agree that 24-29" would be a good size, with 32" next. The cord gets in the way with 40" circs, especially on only 100 sts.
Just for a comparison, I have 438 stitches of a heavy worsted wt. yarn on a sz. 6, 47 in. needle right now. I’m working back and forth in garter stitch.

I like the piece going across my lap instead of going around. I want enough length so it goes side to side instead of twisting.
