okay. I’ve been knitting for about 2 years now and have had no large issues with anything I’ve tackled thus far. I’ve actually figured out solutions to things on my own… until now.
I think it’s safe to say that I’m beginning to LOATHE toe-up socks. I’ve never been so annoyed with a project! I feel cramped, I keep having to frog and I’ve almost given up.
I’m NOT giving up, mind you- I just am really frustrated. I feel like I’ve done everything! Right now I’m knitting on a bigger set of needles with warsted yarn to see if I just need to get used to the feel of it. It’s not working.
I haven’t done toe-up socks yet, but I do want to learn. You might want to check out this website. http://www.socknitters.com/. There’s a lot of information there about sock knitting. Maybe you’ll find an easier way to start the toe. Hope it helps.
I have done lots of toe up socks…what it it exactly that is driving you crazy? Is it the increases being kind of tight? What pattern is it or are you just doing a basic one?
If it is the increases that are giving you fits, you may want to try as short row toe…instructions HERE
I’m attempting this from knitty with the magic cast on. It WAS easy to cast on, but getting past the toe is a PITA for me. I’m putting it down until I get my gloves done.
After my first toe-up sock with short-row toe and heel, I vowed to myself never to make another toe-up sock. But then I heard about the Magic cast on for toes and decided to give it a try. The link above makes it easier to make m1’s (using Method C). I haven’t yet decided on a best heel, but the one that’s a continuation of the toe-up page is nice.
