To substitute yarn

Hi all! I am a brand new knitter, and happy to join the club!

I have little question (of course):

I have chosen my next project, the Monk Satchel (http://www.interweave.com/knit/books/files/FolkBagsExcerpt.pdf) but unfortunately, the yarn used (Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece http://brownsheep.com/cf.htm) does not sell in my corner of the world. Normally I would consider buying online, but because I intend to change the colors, I am hesitant to do so (hard to tell the actual shade of a yarn through a computed screen).

Is there a website/book/technique/advice/anything please to help find a suitable substitute? As I said I am quite new, and I am still working on the premise that to disobey the pattern or deviate from it in any way means certain failure. Well that’s a little strong, but I just don’t feel that with 3 scarves, 2 stuffed pigs, 1 needle case and 1 pair of slippers under my belt, i have a good enough “sense of yarn” to just wing this.

Please help?

Oh, I also want to add that I am self taught, and the videos on this website have been a real life saver for me. Thank you for taking the time to do them for new knitters such as myself.

Thanks,

S.

Welcome!

www.yarndex.com is a good source for finding comparable yarns.

If you get the right gauge and have the right yardage, then you can pretty much subsititue anything you want.

Oh wow that was fast!! Thanks for the link I’ll try it out right now!! :cheering:
(Don’t you just hate when you are all hyper over a new project and then lack of yarn gets in your way?)
