Tips for moving and saving stiches?

Hi,

I am currently working on my 1st ever garment - a toddler shrug- and last night spent AGEs transfering the stiches for the sleeves onto spare yarn and then the rest back onto 1 needle to knit the body.

It was way tricker than I expect (dropped 2 stiches) and would appreciate any tips. I have 1 stich saver/holder but it was no easier to use than the yarn or needle.

I’ve seen st holders that look like giant safety pins. It would be just like sliding the sts onto another needle, so should be really easy.

I use a crochet hook to thread scrap yarn through sts. Works easily as you slip them onto the yarn and drop from the needle one at a time. With a skinny hook, you can run the yarn right through the sts while still on the needle. If you don’t have a hook, just thread the scrap yarn into a sewing needle.

I usually use stitch holders that look like giant safety pins. It might just be something that requires practice.

I would think using a yarn needle and spare yarn would be the easierst. Just move the stitchs off the knitting needle onto the yarn needle.

It’s the reverse of that I have more trouble with - getting the stitches back onto the knitting needle from the waste yarn. :eyes:

I used the needle with the thread - not surprised if I sewed a few stiches together. I have not yest got to the stage of taking them off the yarn yet - oh lord.

I think cftwo may be right - I just need to practice

I use another needle, generally a circular; you just slide the sts from one to another and when you need to knit them again, you can knit off the other circ. Sometimes I use a large stitch holder, and occasionally, spare yarn, which I thread through the sts with a crochet hook because my darning/tapestry needles don’t have a large enough eye for yarn.
