I just started knitting a dishcloth with cotton yarn. Anyone have any tips on knitting with this? I feel like I’ve never knitted before. :wall:
Tips for knitting w/ cotton
I’d be interested in the answer to this too - I’m knitting with cotton for the first time and I keep splitting the yarn.
Make sure your working yarn tension is good… you may need to wrap the yarn around your finger once more than usual.
If you can, don’t use metal needles. Bamboo is great for cotton because it has a bit of grab, which keeps the stitches from slipping around too much.
Cotton yarn doesn’t stretch as much as some others, so it’s easy to knit too tightly. If you can’t seem to get your needle into a stitch, try to loosen up your tension.
I think knitting with cotton is an aquired taste. I’ve never really minded it so much, but since I live in Florida, it’s a necessity, so I’ve adapted.
Good luck!! :XX:
I just starting knitting a dishcloth as well with the cotton yarn and it’s turning out very nice. I noticed that I need to pay more attention to my tension than normal but the results are pretty cool so far. I’m using metal needles so far but I’ll definitely try bamboo next time for comparison.
I was able to find the Lily’s Sugar N’Cream balls for about $1.57 online at:
http://www.herrschners.com
and it’s the cheapest I’ve found so far. I have to admit - I ordered about 25 balls this weekend and since I’m not a patient person to I had to go to Michael’s and buy a couple to last me the 7-10 days alotted for shipping!
I knit dishcloths with Lily Sugar n Cream yarn. My tension is a little tighter with cotton compared to other yarns. It is really really hard for me to do a k2tog with cotton if my tension is too tight also. I’m trying to losen up…loL.

That’s what I used. I got used to it. Thanks for all the tips! Here’s a picture of it.
Brooke…I think you deserve the FASTEST KNITTER award!!!
Do I have to write a speech?!?!?!?!? It was really simple. Plus I always have my knitting in hand. My DH complains because I knit while I cook.
