I just saw this tip for changing yarn in wide stripes when knitting in the round – it is for the situation when you would be cutting and weaving in rather than carrying your yarn.
It has a preparation step before doing one of the usual jogless transitions.
I haven’t tried it yet but will report back when I do a project with wide stripes. I love stripes so I am sure to start a pair of striped socks soon.
Knit to one stitch before colour change. Knit the last stitch of the round with the old and new colours held together.
(See video at 4:30 for how to do this so the two colours end up in the right order, if you need to.)
Drop the old yarn and knit a round with the new yarn, stopping when you get to the last stitch again.
The last stitch will have two loops, with the old colour on the right and the new colour on the left.
Treating those two loops separately, sl1, k1, psso (or SSK). Tug gently on the yarn tails to snug up the stitches. The old colour should lie on top of the new colour, concealing it.
Remove marker. Slip first stitch purlwise. Replace marker. This is your new beginning of round. Continue knitting.
Oh good! I’m trying it today too. I’m knitting the first wide stripe on a sock (the cuff).
It seemed to work well. Had to jiggle a little to get the front stitch to cover the back stitch, but now it looks good. I will post a photo in a day or two when the sock is done and I’ve woven in the ends.
