My Aran sweater pattern tells me to use the “thumb method” of casting on. Anyone know what this is?

Here’s one version of the thumb cast on but it’s not a good one for a large number of sts.
Better to use a knit or a cable cast on (see Free Videos tab above, Cast Ons).
I’ve also seen long tail called thumb cast on and that’s a good method to use too.
You don’t necessarily have to use the method recommended in your pattern. You can almost always substitute your favorite cast on.
Unless it’s just a few stitches like for the underarm I wouldn’t use the thumb cast on.
