The pattern is worked over 9 stitches on stockinette background

I am trying to knit the Double Herribone Mesh Stitch. I don’t understand when it states that it is worked over 9 stitches on stockinette background.I watched a video trying to figure it out, however, the video showed 9 stitches on the left needle and 5 on the right. When they started the pattern with the 9 stitches transferring the stitches to the right needle you couldn’t tell how it was done. Does anyone have any ideas on how to explain this?

Welcome!
Is this the stitch?

yes it is.

Usually New Stitch A Day has a written row-by-row description of the pattern but I can’t get to it on my computer. Here’s the stitch pattern written out from KnittingFool. See if that helps.
