Just wondered if anyone has made this afghan, and what the difficulty level is. Could a moderately experienced knitter handle it? …with a little help from the LYS? I’ve read that some of the squares are easier than others. It sure is a beauty…

It is definitely a fun knit but do yourself a favor and grab the errata first. I started several blocks only to find several errors in quite a few of the patterns. There is errata on Ravelry. They are relatively small blocks and excellent for learning new techniques.
I am a self-taught crocheter, knitter, spinner and didn’t find it too difficult. Also make sure to familiarize yourself with charts

Jan, all the copies of it on amazon are being sold by private sellers (not Amazon) - they set whatever price they want. I’d say grab it up at the best price - those two sellers have great feedback ratings.
Thanks, Yarncharmer. The price difference between the new and the used just really threw me. I thought for awhile that maybe a hacker had gotten into the site and upped the used book prices!! But God help me though, I’m going to try it.

I got the book for my birthday last December, and have yet to try any of the squares! I get a little intimidated when I look through the instructions, but looking at the actual finished squares themselves, I feel pretty confident that I can handle most of them. [I]However[/I] I have pretty much done my best to avoid charts up until this point (starting to give them a bit of a shot) and that has really kept me from getting started on this afghan. I’m thinking this will be my winter project - plus, I need to pick out, and pick up - the yarn for it! I want to use something fabulous, and will probably need to use the layaway plan lol!

Oh yes, her squares do look nice. My book came several days ago. Was really surprised and thankful that it was so well organized/thought out. Georgia Vincent’s square threw me for awhile. I couldn’t figure out how she made a square while knitting in the round on circular needles! Looks like it might have something to do with strategically placed decreases?? I also found a tutorial on youtube on how to knit without a cable hook/needle and have been practicing. Seems so much easier.

Have you thought about setting up a KAL? I might be interested in joining up although personally I would only be able to manage one or two squares a month.
Have no clue as far as how that would work, or how to set it up. :shrug: I’m embarassed to say that I had to google KAL. Came up with Korean Airlines and I knew that wasn’t it! LOL Just not sure how long each square will take. Will depend on difficulty level I s’pose.

I visited the your link. For some odd reason, I never click on Knit along! Usually just go to general
knitting, pattern central and the how-to questions. Anyway, I’d feel more comfortable participating in a knit-along first to get a general feel for it before ever starting one up. It does look interesting though! Thanks for sharing!

I just bought this book on ebay, a brand new copy, for $8.00. It’s paperback but I usually work from a photo copied pattern not the original so I don’t care if it’s hard back or paper back.

I’ve avoided them too! On some of the charts in this book the symbols seem to be running together and it’s hard to tell where one symbol stops and the other begins! I think they’re well drawn, but I’m just not used to following along. But so many people like them so I guess there’s got to be something to it! Good luck when you start on it this winter!
