Thanksgiving dessert ideas

I am always in charge of dessert for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and I have no idea what to make this year. I’m making pumpkin pie, of course, along with a double layer pumpkin pie, and my mom is making a pumpkin cheesecake. But I’d kind of like to make something that’s not pumpkin related, as well.

I usually make either a bee sting cake, a coconut cake, or a carrot/spice cake, but I’m kind of tired of making the same things over and over. Can anybody suggest any great ideas or recipes? I’m just kind of at a loss this year. :??

Thanks!

I’m bringing chocolate chip pecan cookies. It’s the Mrs. Fields recipe.
I bring them every year. The kids love them as well as the adults who get tired of pie and cake.

HMM - I’m intrigued with the Bee Sting cake - what is this?

Personal favorites in my house - Mince Pie, Pecan Pie, Peanut Butter Pie, Virginia Apple Cake, and Carrot Cake (non-traditional recipe)

Chocolate Chip Cake (I’m making this myself and it’s also AWESOME for breakfast):

Duncan Heinz Butter cake mix
1 small package Jello instant vanilla pudding
1/2 bar grated chocolate (I usually use German chocolate - it’s in a green package)
chocolate chips
1 cup oil
1 cup milk
4 eggs
A bundt pan

(Let me just say to start - grating the chocolate is the most time consuming part of this cake. I’ve found that using a zester instead of a grater works so much better. In any event, grate your chocolate first before doing anything else and you’ll be happy you did.)

With mixer, beat together cake mix, vanilla pudding, oil and eggs. Fold in grated chocolate. Put half of mixture into bundt pan, add enough chocolate chips to your liking, put rest of mixture on top (and maybe a few more chocolate chips?) Make sure chocolate chips are pushed into the top layer of cake mix. Lick the spoon, bowl and detach and lick the mixer blades, seriously. It’s that good.)

Bake at 350 deg. for an hour or until inserted knife or toothpick comes out clean. Let it cool in the bundt pan (I can’t stress this enough!). Once cool, tip over onto plate and cover with powered sugar if you wish.

It’s awesome. Every one will love it and love you and you’ll be the hit of the party! Happy Thanksgiving!

Lessee; traditional in our family were
mince pie,
apple pie,
cherry pie,
chocolate bread pudding,
steamed molasses/cranberry pudding

In my family it is traditional to have a pumpkin pie, a pecan pie, and then fruit pies and/or crisps (apple, cherry, & peach). I’m not a big fan of pie crust, so I prefer the fruit crisps. I sometimes make a fruit salad, which can also be a dessert.

If you have kids coming over, desserts such as cookies, brownies, or fruit bars that are cut into small finger-food size portions are great.

I always make German Chocolate Cake. It never feels like Thanksgiving without it!

I always make a cranberry cheesecake.

This is a FANTASTIC recipe and it gets gobbled up quickly in my family.

First off, THANK YOU for that Chocolate Chip Cake recipe!! I’m going to make it, by golly! It doesn’t have milk, so my dh will be able to eat it.

Ok…that said…

I have never made pumpkin anything for dessert. I have a friend who makes me a Key Lime Pie every year, which my family devours. In addition, I usually make a Strawberry Bottom Cheesecake Pie. I found the recipe several years ago when I went into the store intending to buy stuff for a different dessert. I had left my recipe at home and looked for it on the back of the pie shell labels. When I found the strawberry recipe, I changed my dessert on the spot. It’s a hit. If you want the recipe, let me know. I can post it when I get home.

My mom usually makes a chocolate pie (along with the pumpkin and apple pies…lol) that is delicious and simple! I think you just get a pie crust, and, that chocolate pudding that can be used for pies. Just make the pudding, dump it into the pie crust, top with whipped cream, refrigerate and you’re good to go!

One of my co-workers made this for our office thanksgiving feast yesterday, and it was fabulous! Super easy, too.

Curried Fruit
For as long as Stephanie DeBrow, a law student in Austin, can remember, her family has been making this curried fruit dish, which is incredibly easy and quick to make. The smell of spices and fruit baking in the oven will make doubters forget that they are eating A) curry in a sweet dish, and B) canned fruit. “People often turn up their nose at the idea of curry combined with fruit, but once they try it, they often return for seconds,” she says.
1 can peach halves
1 can apricots
1 can cherries
1 can pear halves
1 can chunk pineapple
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 tsp. curry
1 Tbsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 cup butter
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Drain canned fruit and place in a baking dish. Combine brown sugar, curry, cinnamon, nutmeg and butter in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Pour the butter-sugar mixture over the fruit and place it in a 350 degree oven for 20 minutes. Serve warm. - Stephanie DeBrow

Gosh I’m hungry.

Auburnchick, I don’t know how bad the lactose intolerance or milk allergy is for your DH, but I’m thinking that maybe the vanilla pudding might have powdered milk in it. Maybe not. Just don’t want any adverse reactions. In fact, I wrote that from memory and hope I haven’t left a milk step out. I’ll look at my recipe tonight and double-check it. In any event, if there is milk in it I bet you could use soy milk and it would work the same. I’ll get back to you. I swear it!

Thanks, my friend. I’m going to run out to the store anyhow and get these ingredients. I’ll take a peek at the list on the pudding mix. If possible, I might hit the organic section of the store and see if there are any lactose-free puddings.

Unfortunately, we can’t do lactose-free milk, and I’m not a fan of soy, so those aren’t options.

Thanks a bunch!!

:muah:

I don’t love regular soy milk and only get the vanilla soy milk. Even if you don’t like soy for drinking, the vanilla soy is great for baking

Yep, I can’t stand soy milk. :ick: However, I have baked with it before and you really can’t tell the difference.

There is a cup of milk in the recipe (I edited the post).

I bake with vanilla soy too. You really can’t tell the difference. And I checked the pudding ingredients and there wasn’t any powdered milk in there so you should be good to go.

I love chocolate pecan pie. I also make a sweet potato pie that’s really easy to make. BTW. I make anything that I’m going to be eating with a meat meal non dairy. I substitute rice milk for real milk. Any label that has the word “pareve” or just a plain U inside an O without a small letter D beside it is non dairy.

MOOOOOOVE OVER, I’m headin ta yore house! I love ALL of these, tirelessly!!!

And I’ll come by your place for this delicious cake!!! :teehee:
